Help with 7.3

Hey Everyone, had fun with a Duramax yesterday!! Boy did I suprise the heck out of the Dmax driver! We were cruising down a 4 lane road and I wasnt on it and trying to get into the left lane where the Dmax was. Well the jerk saw my turn signal go on and sped up so i couldnt get in. I pushed down the go pedal and spooled up, big mistake Dmax! He layed it to the floor and you could hear him coming up hard but once my turbo spooled, bye bye! It was pretty funny at the stop light, the guy wouldnt even look over at me. noticed he had gauges on the pillar so assuming there might be some mods under the hood. Funny thing is I dont have my FMS in right now as I had my truck into the dealership for warranty work. So I spanked a Dmax with just 275's and a BHAF. Poor guy, bet he trades it in on a real diesel!

He wasnt bombed very much if you pulled him, believe me. My cousins dmax has only an edge juice on it,and it will show you tailights with your FMS and 275's,even if you bombed transmission. I love the Cummins, but there is no denying the duramax is quick. So you know, when my truck was 425RWHP, (comp box,DD3's,4",full DTT trans,14cm turbo housing,BHAF))I raced my cousin,I beat him,but it wasnt by much, certainly wasnt worth bragging about. At the time my truck ran 13. 60-13. 70's at 97mph. That was a good story though!

The Dmax driver either wasn't trying of has something (Other than being a Chevy) wrong with his truck. A buddy and I ran a stock dmax while riding in his truck that was an 02 ETH and was running 275's and a boost module. We lost, and it wasn't even all that close.

P. S. We know the DMAX owner, so we knew that it was stock.

I have left 2 dmax's in the dust with my 03. It is still stock exept for the AFE filter. I am sure they were stock also.

I love these storys.

As you dream this up, do you actually have "a vision" of him putting it to the floor... . and then you see the look of total disdain on his face as you say "bye. bye"... ..... or can you read it in their eyes in your mirror? Or is this just your creative interpretation.

Not saying it didn't happen. But just how do you know what he is doing in the cab. ie. how did you "hear him coming up hard"?

I have owned two CTDs and I am here to tell you the GM Dmax is fast. Not saying it is better, just faster.

I fiquired a little flack for this post would follow :D Actually it was totally legit. wife was in the truck to witness the whole thing ( she was quite embarrased, shes not into the racing thing) My window was down and I heard him step on it, plus a little puff of smoke followed, not much though. I feel pretty confident he was on it hard, plus to back it up he was a real jerk at the light, had his nose all turned up and refused to look over. My guess is he was embarrased. Believe it or disbelieve it, dont matter to me. either way I had some fun with a maxipad.

I believe once you are rolling along it is harder for a DMax to take the Cummins, which I believe to be the case with jrandol's story. If you compete from a dead stop the DMax has the advantage.

I've ridden in a DMax with the juice, intake and 4" exhaust and yeah it was fast off the line. Once it was at cruising speed it didn't feel that strong, definitely not as strong as my '01 with DD2s.

I agree with that Vaughn. The allison also helps out a lot!!! Sweet!!!! I have yet to drive the new dodge AT, anyone that has had a previous years CTDs with an AT want to compare the new HO 03 5-speed AT? (48RE?)

i raced my buddies 98 CTD stock(he asked to race) smoked him so bad it was not funny. i have a stock 03. hanging with a duramax hmmmm..... let us put it this way it would be close of course weight advantage goes by far to maxipad. the new 6. 0's will smoke you! while on the longest bridge on the world i did leave one(duramax) in the dust after his rev limiter kicked in. he was so mad i told my wife that he had a rev limiter and even she started laughing at him.

also i raced a cop the other night i won but then i lost. i saw the f150 lights. he was ridding my tail so i fueled it figuring it was a high school kid who liked to smell diesel,he was dust. that was until his blue lights came on..... woops, an f150 cop watch out. thats all right he pulled me over and just wanted to talk about my truck to the point that i had to ok well i got to go(no lie). again my wife was laughing her butt off. you see now why she likes to ride with me.

after hanging neck and neck with a f250 she oked the purchase of the comp for 03' i am saving my change. then i will say look out duramax and 6. 0's. no one around my town bombs there diesel (much)so with just this mod i will be king:)

A healthy 6. 0 will be tough to take, but based on some weak numbers stock 6. 0s have put down at a couple dyno events recently in the Northwest (230-240hp range) they should be a fairly easy take.

Another data point - I took a bone stock crew 4x4 longbed duramax from a rolling start - my rig being a 1992 2wd 1st gen, BHAF, POD injectors, flo-pro exhaust, 5spd, - 218rhp and 650ft/lbs. Being a 2wd, and lighter, this certainly wasn't apples to apples.

It was up an 8% grade, about 1/3 mile, and 4 full truck lengths. This was my step-brothers, and he asked to race, so I know he was going as hard as he could.

His comment to me, other than "Holy *** that thing is fast" Is that his truck "felt like it laid down on him".
We are wondering if his transmission was protecting him, or if something else was going on. Ran fine going home though, so something about that rolling start on the hill was huge to my advantage!

I would not want to race him on the flats at a standstill. At a rolling start, say third, on the flats, bet we'd stay even or I'd barely pull on him until I defueled at 90 (he would defuel 93-95 or so). My other brother runs a stock powerstroke that runs nice - I'd hate to row gears against his auto from a standstill either, I'd gain back on him but don't know if I'd catch him before defueling.

Mackin, I have no doubt that he did what he said against a "bone stock" duramax. I drove one when they first came out and my first gen would beat a stock one off the line. I don't think I would be in front very long though cause once the duramax got going it went pretty good.

I haven't got to watch a bone stock Duramax make a pass at the track yet but I have seen 4 or 5 with just a Juice box run mid 14s in the 1/4. Before I bought my Dodge I drove a Duramax and a flowerchoke and the max was quicker by far. My Wife and I both thought the choke was a pig. My CTD truck was quicker than the 7. 3 choke we drove even in stock trim.

the other day I got to show the power of the mighty CTD.

I saw a maxipad parked on the side of the road... dead. I think the owner said something about the heads. anyway he was pulling a loaded 4 horse trailer up a slight grade then it just shut down on him. I pulled in front of him hook up a couple of chains and my stock auto dragged him up the hill and off to a garage.

then the dam alarm clock woke me up... .

sorry could not resist.

I'm stock until the CFO approves fixes so I don't play... . yet

Mackin' - with a "content free" response like that, I wonder why you would bother paying the $$$'s for a membership. I guess we'll take your money anytime you want to give it.

How could I loose? 218 rwhp in a truck that ways about a ton less than my step-bro's duramax. 650 ft/lbs of torque is way more out the rear wheels than a stock duramax - and I made damn sure we were going up a long steep grade and that we started in 3rd gear (for me in a 5spd).

I'm not saying his Duramax isn't one of the nicest trucks I've ever been in - heated leather, full on loaded GMC. Could be one of the fastest too if he drops a Juice and other $$$'s into it. But I wasn't going to let him tell me how much faster his bone stock truck was than mine when I am capable of doing simple hp/weight and torque/weight ratios. Yep, I smoked a pile more than he, and the noise was deafening, and the Getrag with 181K on it was growling like a pit bull locked onto somethings neck. But he sure shut up after that. Email me or PM me, you can talk to him if you like.

Just the facts, deal with it.
jon.

It always quiets them fast when a first gen puts it on 'em. I know I get alot of suprised looks when I am loaded heavy and flying in the passing lane in the 1978 power wagon.
