In the sticky note about the killer dowel pin problem, the response from Cummins states that early in 1998, the dowel pin was changed to a "blind hole" design. Does this mean that I should not worry about this problem on my 1998 model? Or, does it mean that the problem was rectified on models actually built in 1998? Thanks in advance for any information.

If your truck is a 12 valve, it's something you might want to take care of soon. mine waited until 156,000 miles to fall out.

Fixing it after the fact is no fun at all.

Even though the case design was changed in early '98 it's my understanding that stocks of the old case weren't used up until '99. Even early model 24 valves could have the problem.

Don't gamble, fix it.

Jason...

I guess the guys have answered this for you so all I'll do is echo the point a little more. I have a late 98 12 valver and have had 2 KDP problems, one at 32,503 miles and the second at 54,965 miles. If this was fixed in early 98 as they claimed then i would have had no failures.

Funny thing about my jobs were this, when the first one was done by the stealer it had the first design cover installed again and it only lasted as you can see a little over 22,000 miles. The second job was done by a independent shop ,as the stealer and I had rounds about my mods(which was not a issue to me,all I wanted was my truck repaired the way I wanted it done if I was paying for it and they wanted only to put it back to stock)and when the new front cover(second one) came it was a new design and updated part number,go figure.

So as they said above, take care of it,its a bomb waiting for a place to explode. The little amount of time invested to prevent it now is way better than the pile of carnage you'll see if it goes bad on you, trust me,been there-done that... ... . Andy

Now I wonder what happens if you do a jig repair on a truck that turns out to have the new style cover? Will the drill bit hit the aluminum casting that is over the new blind pin hole? If it does, will one think that their pin has moved out and fear that they better tear it apart right away to drive it back in, only to find they have the new style case and all the work was a waste?

Just some thoughts...

Blake

Here's a shot of the upgraded gearcase. I don't think the casting comes out far enough to keep the jig from working.
