Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Killer dowel Pin Reminder!!!

I know that some have been putting out the occassional reminder about taking care of KDP's that are on the loose so here is my two cents. I just got done tearing down a 1995 12 valve with very low miles that died from a P7100 failure (catastrophic). When I pulled the timing cover off I pulled the pump gear and the pump then decided to take a look at the cover just to see if any of the bolts were loose, they weren't but the dowel pin was sticking out a good 1/4 of and inch! Don't put it off any longer. I could spin the pin with my fingers!!! It is way too easy to eliminate this potential issue so get it done. If anyone gets on here and cries about their worthless Cummins dropping a dowel pin... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... I'll say I told you so. If anybody in Alaska wants help doing this I will volunteer shop space and time/tools to help get it done.

my 96 i bought to replace my smashed 96 has 289,000 miles on it and i will be pulling the cover this week to replace the front seal, wonder if the kdp has ben fixed before? i hope so, if not ill do it.

Its a cheap and easy fix, do it.

I've got one of the KDP tool kits. If some body wants it, please make an offer.



Both of my trucks are fixed, and I don't expect I'll ever use the tool kit.

Reading over on Competition Diesel yesterday and there was a guy with a '97 with all kinds of performance mods done that got bit by our beloved KDP. It amazes me how folks can do all these performance mods and put off a KNOWN problem until it's too late.



Don't put it off. Get 'er DONE.

Fitz- Please tell us about the pump failure. What happened and could you tell what caused it?

I'm not sure what happened to the pump? The engine has several burned pistons, more like melted, and obviously suffered from overfueling. The turbo looked good and everything else checked out ok. She just started overfueling and grenaded. Cummins sent a new engine under warranty to replace this one and didnt' want it back so I ended up with it. :-laf
