I had a friend ask me if $1500 was a reasonable price for replacing the gear case. He already had his truck at the shop and they were in the process of tracking down parts. I told him to get his truck from them quick as possible. Chris (Strick-9) wanted to get in on the "mess" which made it really nice to have some help and moral support :D Though it's a long job, it's really not that difficult. Cam removal is the one major pain in the a$$. Chris and I both scratched our heads a few times but within about 30min the cam was out. Our main concern was hitting the tappets (which are stuck to 1/2" dowel rods) therefore causing them to drop to the oil pan. Cam installation was much easier than removal. Our only screw up came when we put the push rods and rocker assembly back together. The intake push rod on #1 cylinder did not seat properly in the tappet. When we tried rolling the engine to TDC I felt resistance and stopped... . but it was to late. Luckily a new push rod is only six bucks. My friend was real pleased, he got the gear case replaced, timing set to 15. 5 deg, and new u-joints for a fraction of what the shop was going to charge him. Chris should have some pictures to post if anyone is interested.

Y'All ever thought about going into business? Between you and Chris, it seems like you have either blown up or fixed just about everything :D

I'm thinking of putting myself up for adoption so that they can take me into their diesel family!

Matt - hoping and praying everyday that my KDP behaves itself!!

P. S. DOES ANYONE HAVE THE CPFF JIG???!!!

Cord,

You scared me with this thread. I thought you were going to say that yours finally wiggled its way out and busted your case.

I'm starting to like this dowel pin repair. I'm getting much quicker at it. I did another one yesterday. Our first attempt at replacing the case, took Cord and I both 16 hours. The truck I worked on yesterday, I was able to finish in 12. 5 hours by myself. I did have a little help timing the pump though. I wish I could charge the $1500 that others do. I would make some easy money.

I've been sitting on all these pictures and don't really know what to do with them. I guess I could build a webpage that walks you through the repair and shows the damage done and the upgraded case, but that would take a long time and I don't really know if anyone would be interested.

I'm secretly hoping my KDP will fall out. When I take the intercooler off, I could repace it with a 24 valve intercooler to lower EGTs. Not to mention that cool shiny silver case would really accent my new silver P7100. :)

Maybe extended periods of run time at 3800 rpm will help work it out?

Web Site With Pictures

I would sure like to see a web site put together explaining how to fix the timing pin before it breaks and after it breaks. If you need help with the web site construction, please let me know. I will help as much as time allows.

Secretly hoping the KDP will fall out:D :D I can come over and chunk rocks at your old intercooler if you really want a new one that bad!! When is your pump supposed to be in?

Nevermind that ISB intercooler... .

Go for the full-pull with a nice custom Spearco core... . it should only be about $1200... . :D

Matt - still waiting for my adoption papers.

Case500D, it's not the timing pin that breaks, it's a dowel pin that helps to locate the gear case casting to the block. In some cases it falls out and gets caught in the gears and breaks through the side of the gearcase thus the name KDP or "Killer Dowel Pin"

No, we didn't install a new cam. This guy isn't really in to performance, however I did give him some free hp. As bad as it sounds I sometimes too secretly wish for things to go wrong. If I could only break more parts, I could then rebuild them and replace them with better parts:D (Bill K... . didn't we talk about this at the meet:D :D ... . maybe we're not learning anything but it sure is fun trying!!)

I remember a thread a while ago about cams... ... . correct me if I'm wrong here...

I have a cam in my injection pump and one that makes my valvetrain happy too, right?

I also recall someone sayin' that the 6BTA-160 cam is good only if you regrind it... ...

Clarification would be helpful.

Matt - I just got out of class and my brain is FRIED!
