BHerndon here::: I have a 1990 1 ton duelly with 160 Cummins and auto trans. I have a question for someone with lots more experiance than I have.

GUESTION??? Does the 1990 160 HP Cummins Engine have problems with the Killer Dowel Pins???I bought the truck used and there's no telling how many miles it has on it. It still runs like very strong and FAST. I just don't want my engine to fail because of something this simple.



Please Advise::::::BHerndon :confused:
 
Yes there have been reported cases where the killer dowel pin have unleased it's wrath upon first gen engines.

I believe the frequency is much less than some other eras of engines, but then you have to ask yourself..... do ya feel lucky?

Best bet would be to perform the fix of your choice.

Do a search for KDP fix. You'll find plenty.
 
I think there are more cases of the timing cover bolts becoming loose on the first gen engines than the KDP, but if you're going in to fix one, fix both. Loc-tite the timing bolts and tab the KDP at the same time.
 
I just tab fixed my KDP on saturday, the pin was ok, however I wouldn't want the bolts to be any loser! Now I have the piece of mind to know that Those parts are secure. :-laf
 
Thanks to everyone for the quick reply and knowledge. I will fix both things as soon as possible. This old truck looks pretty rough but it runs like a scoulded dog. I think someone did some tweeking befor I bought it. It will go from 0 to 60 very quick and be in high gear at about 25 mph. Torque is unreal. Thanks Again
