I have a friend that owns a 97 ctd and has recently experienced KDP problem. I haven't seen the truck yet but he tells me there's a 2" hole in the timing cover where the pin shot out. Can anyone tell me where we can buy the KDP kit? Thanks, JR

It's too late for a KDP kit. It's purpose is to prevent what happened to your truck. It's a big job to repair the damage. Look here: http://www.cumminsdatabase.com/read.php?id=111

Another thing. Using JB Weld or something like that is not a good idea. The gear case has to support the weight of the injection pump. There have been cases where that kind of repair resulted in the gear case breaking and causing really expensive damage.

BD sells a KDP kit. It includes a tab kit and new main seal with instructions. It's $99. 00. After reading the instructions, I paid my local diesel performance shop to do it.

When your friend buys a new case it will come with a dowel pin hole that has been properly machined to prevent the pin from walking out. If a used case is the order of the day then be sure to take steps to prevent this from happening again.

jray, your friend will have to take the timing cover off to see if any other damage was done. Look closely at the side of the timing gear case for cracks (passenger side of timing gear case).

If he was lucky the dowel pin only damaged the timing cover.

You will need to cover new dowel pin like this.

What Missouri Mule is showing you is called "tabbing". Do a forum search and you will come up with the info on what your friend will need to do when he reassembles his truck.

I got my Tab fix from TST for about $50. 00 which included everything and it worked great, new seal and Gray RTV gasket maker plus longer bolt and tab and Red thread lock tight.

Their (TSTs) instructions are nice also they even have pictures. So good I printed them.

I used Joe G instuctions for my KDP which are nice also.

Now I have two set of KDP instructions on my computer. :)

Yeah! The instructions were great, worked great! I was lucky all the bolts were tight but the 1/8 inch which the KDP was out really spooked me, no clue on how long it would have lasted, the truck only has 85k on the clock.

I am picking up a 98 3500 12v 4x4 QC dually on Friday that was killed by the proverbial KDP at 104K . The replacement engine (98 12v with 109K) has been TABBED :)

Gentlemen, tab your engines!!!!;)

U may try this?

I just bought a dowl pin victum truck to fix. I took the gear case to a fab shop and he welded the broak peice back in in for 60. 00 that beats buying a new one just a thought.

The pin is just used to help hold the gaskets and case while you fit the bolts in.

That was my thoughts a few years ago, just leave it out or pull it out instead of tabbing it. I suggested it and was flamed by a few "all knowers". They said it was "load bearing".

Once the bolts are snugged down, the pin serves no purpose. I just cheat and use a much longer bolt on one of the holes to line everything up. Put the other bolts in, pull the long one and fasten it all up to torque specs.

its crazy

I just rapped my dowl pin reparing up tonight. the fixed caver worked good , never could tell it was busted. Its crazy all this carnage this dowl pin causes and it is just a alingnment pen to put the gear case back on. WOW. Later justin
