fan mount is off-set from center. IIRC 4 10mm bolts hold it on and the one in the 5 o:clock spot is under the rear lip of the pulley and just a hair too narrow to get a wrench in there without grinding a little.

OK, you guys have convinced me to take a peek at mine and tab it if it needs to be. I've found the part numbers for the seal and gasket. Sounds like the gasket is optional and after checking my truck it appears there is no gasket there but maybe it is just can't be seen easily until taken apart.

What is the part number for the tab from Cummins? I stopped at a local Cummins dealer on the way home and he could not find it referenced anywhere. He even called the local Cummins distributor and he had never heard of it either. I found a part number for a bolt #3900631. Is the bolt just a bit longer or does the bolt include the tab? Or does everyone just make their own tab out of a fender washer or similar?

I put it in post #18 of this thread, here is the tab Part# 3958017.
I just used the bolt that was in place. Don't forget to check the inside cover bolts. I pulled them and cleaned with brake cleaner and used locktight to ensure they stayed put.

I have a pneumatic tool for that job. A couple of hits with it and it is loose. They all loosen in the direction of rotation no matter what the vehicle is.

kdp

hey guys, did my 2001 this past friday, the kit was from tst. everything was good but the kdp tab just was not sitting flush with housing, my bolts inside are not hex head they where 6 point torx sockets. i did call tst about problem with tab and the tech said that i should have no problem with the kdp. my truck date of built. (12/00) the pic's from tst site for gear are not like mine's

Well I pulled mine down tonight and guess what!!. My pin was out about 1/4 inch. Took a 3/8 drive extensionand drove it back flush. Installed tab,Cummins parts list calls it a washer. I ordered the kit from Cummins and got alot of stuff I don't need am going to order seal tomorrow and put it all back together. The hardest thing about the whole job was getting the washer tank off so I could get the fan shroud off. I borrowed a fan wrench from a friend . Really not a bad job I had it apart in about 2 hours.

I'm glad my son pointed this thread out to me because Cummins had me convinced the 24 value didn't have this problem. Now we have to do his 99.

BTW I've got 153475 miles on mine.

You need no puller. It's held on with 4 bolts. On the 12 value you need to mark it and reinstall in same position it came off,you do not have to on 24 value. A simple job really. Good luck.

may need to grind a 10mm box end wrench a little thinner to get the bolt behind the fan mount pulley, otherwise no special tools.

dont forget to locktite the internal case bolts while youre in there!! they can cause the same problem!

Supposedly Cummins started using Locktite part way through the '97 model year on the timing case retaining bolts, but of course it makes sense to check them while you're in there!

When I take my fan off I first remove the belt then use a strap wrench on the pulley and use large channel lock pliers. Works like a charm.

If you make some guide pins and screw them in it make it easier to install the cover, the seal slides over the crank a lot easier, and the cover is held in place so you can start the bolts.

where is the best place to get info on performing this procedure? I have an 02 with 205K on it and want to take care of any stuff like this. Is it in the tdr publications? Thx.

ok i bought a fan wrench set from GENOS, whats the deal with the custom 10 mm wrench ?? ill pick one up so i have one to grind, but whats it for ?? i have not looked at the service manual on this job yet or looked to see how the fan comes off,, i figured there would be better info here,, and so far ive seen a lot of info on this job thanks for all the imput,,,

yes its in the TDR but a lot of great info and helpful tips here,,,both are good tools for information

the thin 10mm is only for removing the fan pulley mount from the block which is necessary when taking off the timing cover. 1 of the four bolts is tucked slightly behind the pulley.

ok thanks,, dumb question removing the fan,,,,is it clock wise or counter clock wise to remove it???? hope to get to all this my next 3 days off next week,,thanks for all the help
