Mine moved almost 1/8". Drove it back in, and used a small punch to peen the hole. Also had to tighten up the rest of the case bolts and Loctite them.

Mine was tight, I still made my own tab and put a stop to it anyways. My case bolts though, well that was a different story, there was a couple getting ready to do some serious dirty work, I Red-Loctite that little problem.

I did the drill/tap/set screw fix with the KDP jig eary on after I bought my truck. No clue where the pin was, hopefully it's secure now.

checked mine at 124,000 miles when i the cover off for other reasons. It was recessed in the hole like it should be.

It happened to me

I was a pin victom. It dropped and shattered the oil pump gear at 75MPH and I have 4. 10 gears! :{ The ring on the 6th piston melted the worst. :{ It smoked like crazy and the piston slapped but I was able to limp the 7 miles home with no oil pressure. I bought a whole new motor and put it in.

for a fix so simple, a chance to wrench the CTD, and so costly a faux paus, why not fix it before it fixes you. Or, as your mother use to say, "a stitch in time saves nine". Or was it "for the want of a nail the shoe was lost, for loss of a shoe the horse was lost, and for loss of the horse the war was lost". Or "if you don't behave you will walk". Or "Do you want me to get the belt". Or something similar... . feel free to share... since we are in the sharing mood. :-laf

You just DON'T get it!

I didn't do anything with mine, 204k on it. BUT, when I do my cab swap in a month or so, I'm gonna do it then, when the front is off.

I did the tap & pin fix, too. Matter of fact, I did it in Jay Leonard's son's garage with Jay and Bruce. You'll never meet better people.

i bet that made a heck of a noise when that happend. think you could have saved her by shutting it imidiatley down and geting a tow home? i bet that realy sucked

exactly how hard is it to kill the kdp. i read the article in the latest issue and it didnt give me all the info i wanted. i have a 93 d250 with bout 270k on it. if i truely have to remove the entire timing cover as it appears, it looks like it will be a real project. can someone who has done it to a first gen. tell me around how long it took them and how difficult it was? thanks

I pulled the cover, as Pete says, four hours sounds ok. I did mine along with a head gasket change, so I have no idea how long just for the pin fix. Taking out the front cover allows you to change the front main seal as well. It is not a hard job.

front main seal

If you change the front main as well, be careful seating the new seal. I got a little crossways with the included "installation tool" and goobered the seal and had to buy a second. Doing it the FSM way was a pain as the front plate has different levels of flex on different sides of the seal area. Putting the seal in the front cover on a supported surface and then installing the cover was a piece of cake.

I tabbed the KDP when I had everything open to do the cam. It was ~1/8 forward of seated at 84k miles. I wonder if it was installed at that point as I have heard of a few like that.

JGrefenstette- just buy a timing cover gasket kit (from Cummins, not NAPA) and just do it- we can help you if you get stumped. Your front seal is likely leaking anyway, so it is a good excuse. While you have the cover off, tighten up all bolts you can get to and take a goo look around in there. The TDR magazine shows where the KDP is located. It's near the injector pump and cam gears- that general area.

Mine was recessed; Mom's got peened back about 1/16", She needs a new timing cover gasket (I think it needs a repair sleeve, too), so it will get checked again when I redo it.
