Why oh Why?

I'm starting to think my wifes Subaru Forester is trying to do me in. Every time I get in and out of that car I build up so much static you can see the arc off my hand in broad daylight. Sounds like a small firecracker sometimes. It is getting so bad I'm afraid to touch anything after riding in the car. Never used to do this but over the last year it has steadily gotten worse. Anyone know how to control this.

Thanks,

Jay

I've had similar trouble with a lot of different vehicles. We traded a forester in for my 2500 ram... it does it, the forester did, it as does our wrx.

I just grab somewhere metal (like the door or doorjam) before I get in or out. Then it doesn't build a charge. It seems to happen to me most often when it's cold outside.

So basically... right before you get in... grab the door and hang on till you're seated. As you get out... open the door and hang onto it until you are out.

Get some drag chains!!! We used to have forklifts with non-marking tires, and the forks wouldn't ground through them, like they will with regular black tires. Not sure why, but anyway they would just build up static electricity, and every time a guy would reach out to touch one of our trucks to open a door, he'd get the ever living crap shocked out of him. We ended up getting drag chains so that the forks would ground and dissipate the static electricity. Every once in a while, in the winter, we'd take the chains off to give someone a pleasant surprise!!!! Never heard of a car doing that, but give the drag chains a try, I'm sure you won't notice the constant jingle after a couple days... ... LOL

Heard that a cling free static sheet (the kind you put in the clothes dryer) in your pants pocket will work--never tried it

One other suggestion is to not touch the sheetmetal of the truck on the way out. I do this as to not get my smudgy fingerprints on the trucks paint. Push on the plastic door handle to shut the door.

I have had this problem on every vehicle that I have owned. My wife never gets shocked--Guess she is a more well grounded person----
