Has anyone had to change these on thier truck? Mine has gradually been handling worse so I took it to a dealer for a diagnosis. They need to be replaced. I grease them at every oil change but I have only owned the truck for just over a year so who knows if they were greased at all (didn't appear to be). After I was given a $1000 quote, I looked in the manual. The only trouble spot I see is the 500-600 ft-lbs of torque on the upper king pins. I can get the parts and tools for around half of the estimate so that looks like the way I'm going to go. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello LT: I've moved "front end parts for '93" to the top. check out my post on king pin BUSHINGS. I suggest you look at replacing the bushings,(the top set) you may not need the pins replaced. The tops usually wear first.
Regards.

Did you have a problem with getting the recommended torque or did you have someone else do the job? I found parts at Auto Zone but I'm not sure the brand name. Should they be Moog?

I replaced the tapered bushings myself, the pins were left intact, as the bushings (tapered) appear to be made of hard nylon, they are the wear items. By the way, there is an article in a previous issue of TDR regarding the exact replacement of the upper bushings. I'll try to locate the issue number. There is no removal of the pin itself, just the cap on the top to provide access to the bushings sround the pin. Dodge has a kit with the bushings and gaskets.

Replaced mine on Dodge motorhome chassis. Nasty to get out, had to borrow reamer to put in because I used bronze bushings. But still nowhere NEAR a thousand bucks.

Update:
I had to replace both upper and lower ball joints/king pins/trunions (depending on who I was talking to), the hubs, and the universal joints in the axle ends to fix my problem. Driving the truck is no longer a white knukle experience (and I hope not to get pulled over again on a Sunday AM for a DWI check because I'm all over the road #ad
). The mechanic who did the work (for only $60 more than I could buy the tools for including alignment) said it they were worn out from a lack of grease (probably from the first 9 years of abuse). I guess that is why it was so hard to get them greased the first time. Thanks for all the advice.
