Kitty May Be Running Away

If my kitty were to run away how much louder can I expect the truck to be with the straight thru muffler on it. ? Is it constant or only when on it hard. With the Kitty and muffler its only louder when on the fuel pretty hard but levels out with the decrease in pedal.

Well, sound is kind of hard to describe on the net, but here is my experience.



On my last truck, 2005 Cummins, I replaced the stock muffler with an MBRP replacement muffler since the exhaust is already 4 inch. It did sound better, but I wanted more. I came outside one day and found that my cat had run off so I put in a test pipe in its place. That really woke up the exhaust note and it sounded much closer to my 2001 with the MBRP turbo back exhaust. I would not say it was obnoxious, but it had a real nice sound. When you got on it, it would really sing, but just normal driving it was not bad at all. Turbo spool up was much quicker and you could hear much more turbo whine. Hope that helps you a little.

I'll be doing the cat test pipe thing shortly. I've heard that with the clamps being so tight on the pipes that they are a basically welded together.



Anyway, I'm hearing that the only way to get the pipes loose are to heat 'em up and eventually wiggle 'em loose. I don't want to damage the pipes in case I ever have to put the cat back on.



Anyway, my question is this..... how long does it take to wiggle the pipes loose after heat has been applied?

I just used my grinder with a cutoff wheel and made a short slit on each side of the CAT pipe, which allowed me to use a pry bar to "open" up the CAT pipe and it slid right off. When I had to re-install my CAT for a visit to the dealer, I used 4 inch Stainless Steel band clamps to re attach the CAT - the band clamps sealed the "slits" up nicely.

I took my cat out and used a steel rod to break the insides out. I put it back in so that it appears stock. (05 model) It sounds a little bit louder, and I can hear the turbo more than before. I want to take off the stock muffler and add an aftermarket one. I can't tell a difference performance wise or egt wise, but I love the smell!!!

I took my 06 to a local shop and had them cut off the cat and replace the muffler with a straight through. He didnt want to cut of the cat but i talked him into it. He only charged me 105 for muffler and labor. It sounds just as good as my 00 did and i had a 4inch magna flow turbo back on it and it cost me over 600 for that.

MM, Yes that does help me too, but I'd like to know how it sounded with a load, up a hill at 70 mph etc. If you can elaborate more on the in cab noise, vs. drone if any. I'd like to do this same thing. And will you get another MBRP for you're '06?

The kat fell off on my 07 Mega Cab. When I was patching the gap it left, I decided to take the muffler off. I replaced them both with one piece of 4" pipe 7 ft long. I figured, if it was too loud and obnoxious, I would get a straight through muffler. I am happy with the sound it makes know. In the cab it's not too loud at all, it sounds good, even when I stand on it. Outside the cab it is definatley louder. I would not say it is obnoxious though.

Driving down the highway at 85 MPH still not too loud & no drone at all.



The 07's have what I think is a resonator, between the muffler and the tail pipe. I left that alone. That my be what is keeping my exhaust from being too loud.



The first tank of fuel after replacement milage increased by 1. 2 mpg.

I saw an 06 automatic this morning getting fuel. He took the mufflr off and left the cat on. Sounded lounder than I liked. I think I'll leave mine stock for a while.

I tried this and eventually ended up cutting slits in the cat pipe to gain enough room. I can weld the slits back together if I ever need it again...



The clamps they put on were tightened excessively...

In the past I worked at a car shop, with a little heat (red) you can roll the cat right off. I then put a straight pipe in place,keeping stock muffler. It sounds much better,deeper but in no means to loud. In the future I may install a performance muff. I used the stainless band clamps as well,great fit. Looks nice and easily removed without any damage to either pipes. I bought every thing at a HD truck parts shop ($40. total with clamps(stainless) and all.
