I an leaving at 2am and I finally located the source of my knock. It is coming from the bell housing and gets louder when I remove the dust cover. It sounds like a bolt hitting on every revolution. I checked the bolts through the cover next to where the barring tool goes in and they are all tight. Only one shows damage but it looks like install damage not from hitting on rotation I also checked the bolt in the bottom of the converter. It seems tight and there are no signs of rubbing. What else could cause this noise.

A cracked Flexplate will cause this also. Be careful as it could leave you stranded. The only way to check it for sure that I know of to inspect requires trans. removal

I would also suspect a cracked flexplate. You might be able to see a crack with a flashlight and mirror, but most likely you will have to unbolt the torque converter and slide it back towards the transmission to see anything. You might even have to pull the trans to inspect properly. If you do slide the converter back, make sure you get the bolts tight and use thread lock on them when you put them back.

One last thought: Don't just look at the converter bolts. Put a wrench on them and double check. Best case scenario is loose converter bolts.

Be careful if you use a air tool to turn the motor over and KEEP YOUR FINGERS OUT OF THE ACCESS HOLE! Otherwise you may lose a finger tip, well not really you will know where it is!

Good god, Just go to any auto parts store and buy the flex plate rotating tool. Got mine at Harbor Freight. If you have an auto, you should have one of these.

The nest questions would be;
1. Was there any metal shavings on the bell housing cover when you removed it?
2. Does the noise change when in gear, under load... . ?
