I am happy at last, my knock went away. After listening to it all summer, it is gone. First let me say I have used Stanadyne Performance formula since the truck was new.

I now have 14,400 miles on it. Knock appeared late June, went to the dealer(*******) and had a tech listen to it and he said it was common and that it was an injector that was dirty, maybe 2 or 3. Dodge would not let him replace them and that they recommended I use the truck severely, maybe hook up my trailer and climb a pass. Sold me an off brand additive from their service dept. Knock persisted. I used the off brand stuff and Stanadyne during the summer. Heavier concentration than the bottle recommended. Twice as strong. Middle of September, bought some Power Service Diesel Kleen and poured that in along with the Stanadyne. After 1/3 of a bottle of Diesel Kleen the knock went away!! I keep using the Stanadyne because I have about 1/2 case of it left. I have heard great things about Stanadyne and a diesel mechanic friend highly recommends it. In fact, he said that his shop will take the fuel filter out, drain the cannister and pour a bottle of stanadyne in, the knock will go away instantly. Never tried it as I just changed the filter in July.



Anyway, I think Power Service diesel Kleen did the trick and I don't have to drive to Salt Lake City to get it!
 
Wally's Mart has it in their automotive section. It comes in quarts and 96 oz sizes. The quart is less than a 5'er and the 96 oz is around 12. 00. You should check there for your diesel clean. I like it and use it regularly. Not too much, it will diminish your MPG, so just follow the directions or 8 oz. per fill up is a good measure, then you get 4 fill ups on a quart sized bottle.



Stanadyne's also good stuff, but the diesel kleen seems to work better on my truck.

A full strength blast. . hrmm sounds like a good idea.

What about that stuff BG sells for you to run the engine on in a separate canister, couldn't you just pour a bottle of that in the filter housing vs using their special canister that taps into the fuel lines?
 
When did the knock occur. Was it just off idle or always. I have a little bit of a knock just off idle when I start to accelerate. I didn't know if it was normal or not.
 
Matt, not familiar with "BG". the idea is to get undiluted stanadyne straight to injectors.

MFetzer the knock occurred just off idle and up to about 1500 rpm. When I took it in to the worthless dealer, I put it in drive with the brake on and just accelerated to about 11 0r 1200 rpm.

Loud as hell and had me really worried for a long time.

Also I buy the diesel kleen at Wally's. the only one I bought at the dealer was an obscure brand that is not distributed anywhere around here. I would have to go back to the dealer and look at the bottle, but it did no good anyway.



KD7, I haven't noticed any change in mileage. Poor anyway, the diesel kleen says it is a cetane booster, so I would expect it to increase mileage?

Lube Control Distributors Makes FP60, Additive to clean fuel systems and improve mileage and lubrication of fuel system parts... . I've read many threads here that seem to sing its praises.

Fetzer, mine does the same thing as yours... Totally normal, do not let it worry you. If you around third gens, most sound like that...

They have always made good gasoline products and now have Diesel products.

Check this page out for part #9700 that connects into the fuel system to run their product straight.

The product they recommend in that devise is #244 which is at the top of the page. I don't see why you couldn't keep the 244 on hand and fill the filter canister with it when doing a filter change just as preventative maintenance.
 
Matt, the question is: can that stuff (presumably developed for jerk-pump style injectors, be safely used in a common rail system?

Heavyweight: I agree it is common, I have heard it in many trucks but it still bothered me and now it is gone. that's why I'm happy, now to keep it "gone".



Local dodge star rep said it is because we don't use out trucks hard enough!

I had one of my TECH's go the BG service to my truck after a #4 injector replacement... I think it made the others that sounds good, sound worse now... I dont think it did much at all

Actually I made a mistake in my last post,

#229 goes in the dispenser and #244 goes in the tank. The 229 product specifies CR use.
 
It might be normal but I added a bottle of power service diesel kleen from wal mart and know the knock(which is normal) is gone. I will see what happens on my next tank of fuel with out the additive. If the knock comes back I will head to my dealer.
