My fuel pressure has been going crazy lately. I lost pressure compleatly and pulled over and started tearing things apart. Long story short, it seems like my walbro might be on its way out after only two years.

it quit running but a few whacks against the frame rail and it was running again, but kinda rough and the fuel pressure is all over the place. Anyone have any suggestions or do i just need to replace it?

Are you running the prefilter?

yeah i am running the pre-filter and have a new one on the way as we speak. I suspect it is a little dirty. i did pull it off and there is fuel running through it so i dont think its the reason for zero fuel pressure

Mine did the same after about the same amount of time.

My pre-filter was spotless.

Chnage the regulator, not the problem.

Changed the pump, BINGO!

Not sure what to think about the Walbro at this stage of the game. I guess I will see how the new one holds up.

Had a Walbro fail after 42k miles. Sent to Richard at GDP. He said one of the brushes was completely worn out - the other looked new. He replaced it since it was still under warranty. Maybe a bad batch of brushes? Have 128k on the replacement pump with no problems.

I had the prefilter installed when the pump failed. I cut it open to see how it looked and it was very clean and nowhere close to being restricted.

I think my walbro is bad also. I was heading out for turkey hunting when the truck started to miss. I have my fuel gauge turned off with a needle valve because of it rattling. Stopped to check pressure and its at zero. I headed for home and by the time I got home the truck was running really bad. I called Richard at GDP and he is sending out a new pump. This one on my truck has 18000 miles on it. I also have the 0216 code for a bad injection pump. It only has 18000 miles on it also. Jeff

Interesting we are getting Walbro longevity issues. 2 years is not bad, but the population that have Walbro's need to know to carry a spare if they are approaching that amount of time in place for the pump.

FYI RASP @ 6 years and 92k pumping fine, Walbro backup however.

HMMmmmm - your comments as well as the others in this thread are interesting - hope we're not seeing the start of a trend of early failures of the Walbro as used on our trucks...

Mine has been fine so far, but only about 10K miles on it, and a 1500 mile RV tow looming in a few weeks. I do still have the OEM Carter LP in the line, electrically disconnected, for backup - and had better leave it there it seems...

LESSEE - wasn't "premature failure" of the OEM Carter the reason many of us switched to the Walbro to begin with? ;)

.

Yeah, "Deja Vue" all over again. Even the way my failed, reminded me of a Carter.

I might look into the mechanical 12 valve pump again if this pump fails any time soon. That was my plan once upon a time, but some how I sold myself on the Walbro.

After looking further into my problem I found the prefilter would gravity feed fuel through it. When the walbro would try to draw fuel through the screen wouldn't allow it. I cleaned the screen and my pressure is back. The truck seems to run fine at this point. I will be getting the fuel gauge fixed ASAP.

I just ordered a new one, mine is dying, only had 15-18k. The pressure dropped to 11-12 lbs, i replaced the filter, didn't change, then to 8 it is now 5. 5. I cleaned the strainer, it was clean. I checked the bypass valve, it was good also.
I restricted the bypass to see if it would bring up the pressure and it blew the fuse, the pressure only went to 20 lbs before it popped and dropped to 0. New fuse and it is back to 5. 5.
If it dies before the new one shows up, i will have to put the old carter back in.

I guess I had better get that thing ordered! I'm still a believer though... . The trouble free performance & customer service I've received of both have still been outstanding!

How much is a camshaft with a lp lobe on it to drive a mechanical lp?

RASP is about $629.

What other mechanical choices are there?

I looked at a industrial external gear pump that you could not wear out (and IF you did it is totally rebuildable in the field for a $50 total rebuild kit) driven by a 100,000 hour MTBF 1/7 hp motor. Maybe need to go back to investigating that. Pump ~$150, DC Motor ~$150. (100,000 hours * average 30 mph = 3,000,000 miles MTBF. I wanted to get a pump well beyond the life of the engine, and well beyond what any driver could possible drive, and IF you could do 3,000,000 miles the motor is totally rebuildable for $100).

My walbro came from Wide Open Diesel. It's on it's second truck with somewhere around 25-30K miles. All of my buddies around here are running them and the only problems we've had to date has been related to sloppy installation.

The original Walbro on my 3rd Gen. crapped out after less that a year and about 10K miles. I was replaced, and now all is good. This doesn't sound good. At least I've the stocker in the tank as a back up.

I thought I had the problem fixed but I didn't. Richard had sent me a new pump which arived on Fri. I took a road trip today to western PA and developed the problem again. On my way home I was changing the walbro in the mud and water along the PA turnpike. Not a fun day. I'll send this pump back for Richard to look at it.

Save yourself the headache and ditch the walbro. I went through 2 of them before I switched to the mechanical fuel boss from Rich. First one had 1 worn brush, 1 good brush. I figured it was a bad batch and gave it a second chance. 2nd pump lasted about 6 months. I didn't bother to take it apart. I just threw it in the trash where it belongs. These pumps may work fine for fuel injection on gas engines, but I don't think they can cut it for our use. Have no idea why though.
