I need to get some opinions on my '73 Dodge Challenger project. I have a very, very healthy and moderately modified 318 in my car and wish to purchase a good exhaust system. Most of the companies selling systems offer 2. 5" diameter exhaust. Will this be too large for my motor and will I lose bottom end power? :( Should I stick with 2. 25"? Any help is appreciated. :D

IMHO

Not really an issue, if you have a good set of headers.

Past each header flange, you can put whatever size (larger than 2. 25") you want.

Went

I built my own exhaust from the headers back on my 84 P/U, went with 2 1/2 and 24" glasspacks. It is a little loud at peak torque around three grand, but other than that fairly quiet just putting around. The 318 is a good engine, a little weak in the valvetrain, but the bottomend is strong. After 100,000 miles count on new timing chain and heads being rebuilt. It can be built to eat up the big boys.....

Exhaust

2. 25 dual exhaust should be just fine. If you are lucky and can find some of the old exhaust manifolds, the large ones, from a 340 they flow almost as good as headers.

Challenger II,,I would not be afraid of going to 2. 5" or even 3" with the car at all,,You may want to add a crossover tube to the system to help with backpressures,,Many make systems your looking for I just got in and will research my past and present Mopar catalogs for some of the better ones,,Keep in mind one thing though,IF your using a set of headers make sure the collector tubes are as long as they can be,,Short collectors will kill low end and mid range power,,I'll email you what I find later in the day when I get up..... andy
