Fellow Rammers:

I've been thinking about painting that ugly gray valance on the front of my truck for a long time, but didn't want the probable peeling of the paint. Then, Krylon advertises the plastic fussion paint that specially adheres to the plastic. Well, about three weeks ago, I painted my valance and grill gloss black. The paint really adhered to the plastic. I've hit giant bugs and washed the truck twice and it's still looking good.

If you don't like the gray valance either, then give Krylon Plastic Fussion paint a try.

Happy painting, Wiredawg

Wiredawg,

I went to the Krylon site and they claim no sanding or any preperation is required to the surface to be painted :D Sound's a little too good to be true but, I am willing to give it a try ;)

Where did you purchase

Plastic Paint

Sounds like just the cure for all that red plastic interior in the Ford. Now to find it in the store.

Gentlemen:

Griot's Garage makes a paint/dye that will restore the black to its original appearance. It isn't glossy but rather the same satin sheen as the original parts had.

You can get more info on their website:

www.griotsgarage.com

Or, you can avoid this altogether by periodically wiping some 303 Protectant on your black trim. I have used this for years and my black trim looks just like it left the factory. The 303 is also good for weatherstrips, tires or any plastic or rubber material you want to protect.

Hope this helps!

Ace Hardware

All:

I bought it at Ace Hardware, Home Depot don't carry Krylon. I wiped the plastic down with alcohol to clean good, but didn't sand. Don't have any pics, but it looks great. Get some good (3-M) masking tape and mask off areas real good. About an hour or hour and ahlf job.

MSimmins: I painted the gray (from the factory) valance, not the black cover on the top of the bumper. I might paint it though, then I don't have to Armorall any more (less maint. )

My truck is forest green with all black accessories. The gray just didn't work. I even peeled off the silver tailgate "Dodge" and "4X4" decals and replaced with black ones. I may even pull the chrome wheel skins off, polish the black wheels and just put the chrome hub covers back on.

I'm gonna have my wife bring the digital camera up this weekend to see if we can figure out the picture taking/posting thing.

Let me know if y'all have any more questions.

Great idea Wiredawg.

Can't wait to try this, I hate that grey color. I gonna try and do this before Carlisle this Weekend.

Rustoleum is also making a plastic primer that can be applied to any PV or AB type plastic- from there it can be painted with any Rustoleum oil based enamel.

Haven't used it on the RAM yet, but they use a boatload of it at work (photo props) and have been very pleased with the results.

This is EXACTLY what i have been looking for. I want to paint the gray and all the other black plastic on my white dodge white. Wiredog if you have some pictures email them to me and i will glady host them for you and get them posted on here for you in no time. -- email address removed --

The biggest problem with the grey valance is that it is textured. If it was smoother with would not be a big deal to paint it. I wonder if this new Krylon paint will hold up well on it? It sounds promising and if so that would have been the exact product I was looking for. To late now though as I am waiting for my sport bumper to arrive.

Krylon fusion

We got ours at Wal Mart and used it to give plastic adirondack chairs a new life. More colors are coming out. A word to the wise. For this stuff to adhere it is loaded with MEK and other polyaromatic hydrocarbons- it is classified "Extremely Flammable" which puts its flash point at well less than 100 degrees. ONLY use outdoors and in sufficient ventilation to prevent inadvertant ignition. Back the truck out of the garage. Also it says to prep the surface with paint thinner- this will tell you how hot this stuff is. Good luck- fire in the hole!!!!!!!

Just Do It!

All:

I will take pictures this weekend and try to post. You won't be able to see anything other than the ugly grey grill, valance and fog light enclosures looking absolutely fantastic black. On the textured valence, it looks like a satin semi-gloss.

I'm so glad the Germans have better taste and did away with the ugly grey grill inserts in favor of black on the 3rd Gens. Seeing her beautiful black grill is waht prompted me to what prompted me to just go for it.

Further: Don't be skeered! Just Do It! We'll start a trend. Remember, shake well and often shooting.

This stuff is supposed to be pretty good and it holds up well because it does not adhere to the surface like many think it actually "melts" to the surface like PVC glue does on PVC pipe so you in essance bond the two materials together I just wonder how its fade ability will hold up... Do they make clear yet if so I would do a clear coat or two to help preserve the color.

Speculation...

MCrossley:

I suppose many of us will be testing/reporting the performance of this paint over time. My biggest concern has already been resolved: large insects impacting at high speed and scrub brush used to remove them scratching/peeling paint. I washed scrubbed the painted areas for the 3rd time Sat and finish is great. No problems.

I can't tell you in the long-term there won't be touch-up/repainting actions each year, but my dislike of the grey is greater than any recurring maintenance required.

One more thing to add here: I modified Warn fender flares to fit my dually and the semi-gloss they have match the texture/finish of the valance. Better than I haoped for. I'm getting ready to paint my top bumper cover as well to have a total match.

I've used the protectants (Armorall, 303 etc) on the top bumper piece and it looks good as long as it stays dry. Everytime it rains or gets wet it gets streaks in it and reverts back to its former faded look. I think the Krylon paint is gonna fix this problem too.

I'm anal about my truck looking good and wash it almost every week. It gets over 100 degrees almost everyday here in Del Rio and we have lots (and lots) of bugs to perform impact tests. I'm sure this will be a great test bed for the paint. I will report at the end of the summer or if I experinece any peeling or deteriorating finish of this product.

Does this Krylon paint have any restrictions to what kinds of plastics it adheres to? Will it adehere to PVC and ABS?

Kev

Try the high pressure sprayer at the car wash . I forgot twice i spayed my bumpers and it will blow it off pretty quick.

Wiredog,

Very nice :D

The black is a perfect match for your accessories.

This picture does reflect the top bumper cover and fender flares painted with the Krylon fusion.

Thanx for the pic.

Joe

The stuff I had a problem with was a product from finishmasters (about $30 pt) nI will try one more time the said have to pre sand for it to adhere. I might try the Krylon.
