I have been aware that I have a leak somewhere on my VE pump above the timing pin. #@$%! After driving to the shop on Monday, I decided to investigate the source. While idling, I noticed drops of fuel coming from the front of the KSB, (end opposite the electrical connector) at a rate of one every 20 seconds. I called Central Motive Power about rebuilding the pump. I was told to get the numbers off of the pump for an estimate. While cleaning the nomenclature plate, I noticed a brass fitting in the end of the KSB with no other fitting other than the fuel inlet piping on the pump above and one to the top middle of the KSB. There was no indication that the fuel inlet piping is leaking and running down onto the KSB. What is the purpose of the brass nut ( more like a plug) in the end of the KSB? Has anyone else noticed this problem. Could it be that the KSB is the culprit? How difficult is it to replace the KSB? I noticed only 2 bolts at the base, the small fuel line to the pump and the wire on the back end. Your expert input is always appreciated. "OLD UGLY" must survive for a few more years. Greg

Getting ready for a waste motor oil disposal run. Checked the KSB brass plug with a mirror while idling. The source of the leak is at the plug! Is this plug an adjustment of some type or is it a tighten and forget it? Are there o-rings or a gasket that may need to be replaced? Any ideas are appreciated. This just saved me a ton of money. Rocky Mountain Cummins quoted a ball park of $1500-$2500 for a rebuild. Thats a lot of money on a fixed income. GregH

So far I have found that the Cummins Part number for the KSB is 3802205 and retails for $317. 36 from Cummins. They do not sell a rebuild kit or gasket set. The Cummins part number does not cross reference to Bosch part numbers. Next week I will take the truck down to Central Motive Power and get Steve, in the injection shop. to take a look. The Chrysler pump numbers make no sense to him. We'll have to wait until he gets an eyeball view of the setup. I may just take a wrench to the plug. Just wish I knew if it was only an access plug or is it an adjustment? Cant afford to have the truck down now. Am in process of moving. Wish there was one of you all out there who has some knowledge of the KSB and would be kind enough to instruct me. GregH

I wouldn't get too excited about it, and I would not spend 300+ on a new one or 1500 on a rebuild just yet. There are a couple people here that are running without the KSB on the pump. Someone should chime in here eventually.

Gee, that seems steep for a rebuild. I had my pump and injectors rebuilt for 700-800... . I don't remember the exact number now. It was a fuel shop in Billings MT- Signature fuel systems. It has been 60 K since and am still happy with the work. I know I should have gone with POD injectors but at the time I was tapped out.

my pickup started leakin there when i was drag racing and cuz of that they woulnt let me run anymore... but that brass plug on the end of KSB is like a bolt with a o-ring on it just take it out and take it to the parts store and have them find the right o-ring thats what i did.

There are two different styles of KSB, the early trucks had a "wax motor" style, I can't remember what the next style was called, not sure which one GHarman would have but if it is that easy go for it...

You guys collaberate and figgure it out? I'd be interested to know the EXACT location of said leakage.

That is the pressure relieve valve (for the KSB) Remove it, (the valve) and replace the o ring from the BOSCH seal kit. If it's leaking from the brass plug, I don't think it has a seal... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Hummmmm. Probably need a new valve. You can do away with the KBS but it take a little doing and some pieces parts. Just fix your leak. Nuff said.

Oh, sorry. Yes the housing is removed as you described. It will have about two/three thin shims in behind that housing next to the piston. Don't lose them. You likel;y will not need to remove the housing, only the valve.

Thanks Gentlemen, for your input. Central Motive Power is the Bosch Distributer. I reckon I'll get some parts when I go down there this week. Greenleaf, Ill take a picture and have it posted. Maybe this would be information that others could use? Thanks again. GregH

91. 5 injector pump number- 0 460 426 184, IF it wasnt replaced in the recall. If it has been replaced, then it would be a 205. Might check with your local Dodge dealer to see if it is in the right window to get a recall replacement.

hey greenleaf, how does one go about removing the ksb? i have an extra cover from another ip just take it off the back side and cap it off? mine has been unplugged since i put the engine in.

Your asking to Remove and Reinstall... ... ... (R&R) or your asking to "do away with" the KSB.

Remember the KSB has a fuel line to it from the pumps internal regulation valve that sets uptop near the governor shaft. There is a different spool you will need to change it out to w/out that external fuel line.

I'd have to look in my binder at the Theory of Operation to review that valve function with **your** year KSB. That fuel line may be plugged-off/capped-off in more than one way.

i would like to do away with it, also the ksb is from a newer ip, i changed it when i rebuilt the pump for some reason that i cant remember now. i think it was off a 183 pump

Got the pictures. Hope to post soon. Sent the images to rpatton. Thanks in advance GregH

Greenleaf, Here they are. Oo. Havent had time to get into Denver as yet. Hope to soon. I dont drive the truck much, unless I have something to haul. Am in process of consolidating my shop tools into one location. Oo. GregH

Well, I had to try it. The plug on my KSB is 17 MM. Tightened it 1/12 of a turn and the leak increased. Guess the seals are shot. Going to town tomorrow to Central Motive Power. Will see what they think about this and if they have the parts. Got the Bosch Part # for the KSB kit. Thanks, GregH
