Remove Silencer Ring

My 90 ctd with auto tr. is louder than normal, and I have others to compare with. The diesel knock became louder while cruising a back road about 35 mph. From gathering info on Tdr sites I beleive the ksb valve may of become stuck in the advanced position ? Truck starts without smoke, no matter if wire to ksb is on or off. I tried to remove ksb, but bolts are tight an alum. ksb seems fragile. Pump timing marks line up. Anyone have similiar problem ?

thanks

Hi Bill,

Welcome to the TDR and the 1st Gen group... . good to have ya. . :D:D

In regards to your question we could use a bit more info...

>Is the truck hard to start when hot/cold?

>Does the truck idle differently when hot/cold?

>Are there ANY other symptoms that seemed to coincide with this problem. . did your mileage change?

>Did you do any work or adjustments to the truck just before this happened?

>Are you having cold weather?

>>anything else you can think of to toss in here will help...

At this point I don't think it's your KSB solenoid. On your model year the type of KSB you have is called a "wax motor" KSB. It is triggered by a sensor on the intake manifold and fed approx. 10 vdc until the sensor detects intake air temps warm enough to no longer require the KSB's function.

A louder engine sound can be any number of things... for example you may have developed a bad injector or two... that can happen and they sound "knocky" when this occurs.

You may have some lifters out of adjustment but that would not be an "overnight" change but rather a slow increase in metalic sound as they loosen due to wear, or ??

One other item which may be a possibility is the flexplate. The auto has a flexplate that attaches the torque convertor to the flywheel.

When they start to fail (as in my case) they start to sound a bit like a rock in a tire "ticking", then slowly they develope further until it sounds like a bit of "timing knock"... after that it's not long before you're stuck on the side of the road.

Try to post a bit more info and we'll all try to help you out on this one... .

pastor bob... :D:D

More info.

Bob, to answer your ??'s, Truck (87chev ctd) always starts great. Truck idle does not change, regardless of temp. or if ksb wire is on or off. ( only driven it since spring). Can't say about milage change, as only put maybe 40 on it since diesel rattle increased. (When I start up at home, I think maybe rattle is normal, but a few miles down the road, I get concerned of harming engine an head home. ) Even switched my side tanks, to use fuel from 2 diferent stations, in case there was gas mixed in fuel at last fill up.

Have not done anything to truck, other than put ksb wire on and off. Wire always seems to be (activated), on both my trucks. As I recall, I removed it last time because area on ksb that wire conects to, felt hot. I started this truck recently in 50's weather with wire off, an little to no smoke. As I mentioned before the timing marks line up on this truck. However it doesn't smoke an has loud rattle, which makes me suspect too much advance ?

My 90 Dodge 5 spd. (same ctd) has pump advanced 1/8 in. , smokes an is quiet. ??

The Dodge, in cold weather, will idle faster an rattle loud for a couple miles, then get quiet. I assume thats the ksb working. ) The problem child (Chev) went from quiet to loud, like a reverse ksb?? Ran a filter full of inj, cleaner through her, no change. This engine idles cold 55#oil, an 40 warm with real gauge, pegs needle on factory chev gauge. Seems high?

Thats enough for now, will tell you how many flex plates an 727's last owner put in, another day. thanks, Bill

Still need help

Think I finaly figured out how to get my signature on here, sorry if my mention of two ctd's has been confusing.

More info on loud rattlin 87 ctd. It sounds like my 90, and a 94, I have access to , only louder and a sharper 'Ping' to the diesel knock ?

While both trucks have great power (to a former small block chev driver), the 90 climbs hills with out increased peddle pressure (good govenor ?) but the 87 needs peddle much like a gas engine. ( no cruise on either truck)

One more thing on 87 rattle, it is louder in gear with brake on, an less pronouced in P or N. But then the 94 with auto tr. , doe's the same thing, only quieter. This test eased my mind about it being a flex plate, somewhat ?

I noticed in A picture of Bushwakr's pump tools, an S shaped wrench. Is that the $38. Snapon ? Are there any less expensive out there, before I get the torch an start bending my own ? Don't expect to use it a lot.

Thanks for listening to my problem, any idea's ?
