Can a wax motor KSB be 'replaced' by a solenoid type KSB?

I have the option of using either an early (non-IC) or late (IC) ve44 for my tugboat. I'd like to use the early one for the additional fuel and timing merits, but I don't want to use the early wax motor KSB because of how it is controlled, and how it defaults if power is cut.

I'm looking for info on if and how the later KSB can be installed in an early VE44. Can it be done? If so, other than the newer KSB, what other parts (from Cummins?) are necessary for the swap?

Orrr.....can the KSB be deleted all together? Again, using which components, and how?

If not, I'll sell my early 44s and just get a later one, and put the KSB on a switch.

I think it can be taken off , a engine that i have that had a bad pump , i replaced it from one off a bus
how ever the first one had a hose runing to the bottom of the pump rather than that hard line so id say you can by pass it
from whative read on it all it does is advance the timing whenthe engine is cold

Hey Sam, tug boats don't work too well on the grass sea. Are you making a move away from the high and dry? :-laf

IIRC, the cases are different but it has been a while since I compared them. I would use the later pump and just tweak it a bit. Carefully though, I think we have seized 3 rotors in the injection head finding a balance. Still not enouhg fuel so back to the drawing board.

alright - thanks guys. I've decided to sell my two early VE44s and just use the later one. This way the default position for the KSB isn't detrimental to how the engine runs, and I'll just put it on a switch. BTW, I've collected a whole slew of data from this and many other sites on how to 'de-computerize' our trucks. You can find it here - https://sam-ayars.squarespace.com/de-computerize-your-dodge/ - it's still a work in progress, but for a 1st Genner or anyone wanting to do a conversion it might come in real handy. Serious props to all of those that will recognize their various inputs to it. There's no money involved - it's just a compilation of lots of threads on the topic.

I have a guy that wants my spare #114, and I have the good #114 for sale. If anyone is interested e-mail me at -- email address removed --
