KSB1-B UPDATED WITH PICS

Called up Kurt (KWIKKURT) today and talked w/ him for a while about all the aspects of his B1 turbos and what they could do for our applications (Two identical '01's w/ BOMB's shown in signature).

He was able to talk me into a KSB1-B which is his fastest spooling B1. Plan is to put it on the first pickup to replace the horribly spooling HX-40/16 that's on there now to hopefully get better bottom end and mid-range w/ the same top-end. Not really expecting the same top-end, but if it runs like we want, when we buy the second, we'll probably go w/ the standard housing to see how much more top-end we get... then they'll also be 100% interchangeable and we can swap them back and forth to find which one works best on which pickup.

Asked if I could have it before the 4th so we could win the local burnout contest if it's held this year, and he figured we could, so hopefully it'll get here in time to do that.

Just had to brag a little... will post results of new turbo when it's installed.

BTW, the best part was when I asked about break-in-procedure and was told "put it on, put oil in it, let the pickup warm up, PUT IT TO THE FLOOR!!!" I can't wait for that!!! Oo. :D Oo. :D

Later all, Josh

you're making me all wet here HARVEY... .

any chance of some more detailed pictures of that bad boy? inlets... outlets... anything? Please? :)

they work when u don't have much fuel but if u really want to make the power call Piers and get his PDR 50/55. Way more power than the b-1 and spool up was the same on our automatic dually

Reb,

Thanks for bashing my purchase... ;)

BTW, I do have a brand new HX-50 sitting in the garage, but as you said, not nearly enough fuel to spin it up (yet!) It hasn't been Peirs-afied either, but he said for minimal amounts of $$$ it would be ready to go...

So anyway, one step ahead of the game there... am not too happy w/ the spool of the HX40/16 (w/ 80 cm^2 compressor) so trying something different. I also wanted something as darn near unbreakable as can be, and from people I've talked to, and from what I've read, the B1 is my best bet... no worries w/ barking it if and when it happens... no break in time, no problems (I hope, and have been told).

And I will be updating this thread as we put the turbo on and so-forth.

u're welcome! One thing, that B-1 is almost unbreakable, which is awesome, but housings still crack, shrink, and rub the fins on the exhaust down. The b-1 is a lot better than a 40. The 40 is one of the worst turbos made IMO. Have fun with the B-1, but when the bombing bug hits harder and those egt's just keep on climbing, . . give Piers a call.

I think that if the BOMBing bug hits too much harder after this turbo, and I really want to do something about it, I'll just keep the B1 and improve my setup with something I like to call twins! :) Kinda spendy, but heck, if you've already got the primary why not just build ontop of it?

I very much like the work Piers does, and it really is something when someone like JetPilot (Doug) is sponsored by them laying down nearly 800 RWHP (or is he over the 800 barrier now?).

I just figured that I'd maybe try something different, something that could/should/hopefully will work better for my application (high-altitude, fairly big power at ~450 RWHP). The only other option was basically twins from the get-go, but I didn't want to spend that much $$$ right off the bat.

I got bashed pretty good in Muncie for getting my B-1. Tell you what, I'm glad I did. The HX-40 is not a great turbo. PDR massages it well, but it still has it's short comings.

But I will tell you this, with my B-1, I do tend to win a few events here and there. I don't think the HX-40 would live that long.

How does it compare to the PDR HX-50? I don't know first-hand. Probably quite well (or slightly better), and will live just as long. But I will make this suggestion. If you are running that much fueling, just go to twins. I have the utmost faith in PDR's stuff. But at that level, just go with twins. The gain from switching to a PDR 50 from a B-1 is minimal. Or even from a PDR 40. You will get more bang for the buck. But then again, what do I know.

Zach,

First one (the one ordered yesterday) is going on Denis' pickup... he has the HX-40/16 on there now and it's a dog up here. We decided to go w/ the fastest spooling one Kurt could build, and we'll go from there. A guy w/ the same transmission we have told Kurt that the KSB1-B spooled as quickly at 6000' as his HY-35/9. Now, I'm taking that with a grain of salt, but if we can get the spool of a 35/12, then we'll be in business.

Should be here before the 4th... am trying to talk Denis into entering the Blue Rig into the car show down in Tulelake... no doubt he'd win his class, and maybe they'll have the burnout contest again this year ;)

No wastegate on this turbo... Kurt says between 40-55 PSI... if we need to change those numbers we have about 6 options between housings, wheels, and ways of wastegating it (actuating the internal one or adding on turbomasters new thing or putting on an external one).

Depending on how this one spools up and runs, the next one may have a bigger housing for more top end... they'll also then be 100% interchangeable w/ about 20 minutes of work.

I'll let ya know when we're going to Medford to smoke the rice at the track... should be a good time had by all. :)

Sounds like an effective setup with the adjustability. And if it spools quick all the better. Oo.

Yes, gimme a holler when you go to the drags, I havent had any Uncle Bens in a long time... :( :D

I put a KSB1-B on a stock (ATS manifold, 4", Scotty II) injector 2002 ETC. The spool with stock injectors is pretty acceptable to me, but I'm not into huge hp. This weekend DD2's, Comp and that should pull my 5er (8k) pretty decently.

But my point jumping in here is that even with stock injectors it spools just fine for a novice. I towed last weekend (only run 60 mph or so) flat FL and with just the B1 and air being the only fundamental change had noticable more pulling ability over an HY and stock.

Does have a tad compressor whine (Scotty II in hush), but think I might try straightening the air flow some to see what that does.

I got the B1 for it's beef, Do It Right ONCE!

Hi all,

The truck that this KSB1B is going on is a 2500 2001,ATS trans. . so far the truck has EDM Mach 2 injectors and a TST PowerMax 3 with the remote. We did replace the HY with a hybrid but its not doing the job. The turbo spools real quick but it does not supply the volume of air that this beast needs now.

We are also going to externally wastegate this setup. This setup will be plumbed back into the down pipe just past the turbo. While I am under the hood. . the stock fuel lines are getting some attention too. For some reason on a full throttle pass. . fuel pressure heads for the bottom of the gauge. If the fuel lines dont help that much. . we will order one of the PE4100 pump kits from Rod@Wildcat... which should cure the problem. .

Should be a fun weekend. . also with temps here in the valley @ 104-106...

Rick

Rick. . better shop around [different vendors] quick, and find the PE now... the vendor is going to dry up the supply for the diesel market... said he see's to much warranty issues for his pump...

Did the dd2's and Comp this weekend. I am a very conservative driver (also have a stock transmission as of right now).

Comming home tonight I was running 55mph/5boost Comp 1/1, pushed it some, hit 80mph/35boost before I glanced back into the cab for crosscheck (about 3 or 4 seconds I think). YEP should tow the 5er NO PROB, lol.

I like the KSB1B! BUT understand the length of the KSB1B is longer than my old HY35 longitudenly. Other than exhaust size changing you have to change the length of the downpipe. Took me 2 tries to get it right, but it runs sweet.

I think that the whine is different with the dd2's. Seems less high pitched. Spool times are definitely shorter.
