I thought the KTA-600's had twin turbos? I only see one in the pics you provided.

Thanks,

Matt

I thought the only ones that had twins were the KTTA-HVT 1150 (hydraulic variable timing) which were 750hp factory.

no there only single turbo i've seen them with twins but i think they make a little more than 600hp the inlet on that thing is about 6 inch diameter its really a cool truck and fun to drive its just to big im 5ft8in and the tops of the fenders are at my chin you can easily lose a car in front of you in traffic have to be careful not to pull up too close it does haul ***** though just wish it had dual stacks

IVe heard of good running KT1150s in the construction equipment parts world going for 10-15k. I see rebuilt ones advertised for 20-25k depending on whats been done to them. They are definitely a nasty motor. I was talking to a couple of guys at a rock quarry that ran 2 identical bulldozers, one powered by a KT1150 and one powered by an 855. The engines were rated for the same power, but all the operators swore that the ol 1150 would push past that 855 all day long, like it was standing still.

A running mechanical K-series, or even a good core for that matter, will bring top dollar to the right person.

This day and age the right person will either be a construction company in desperate need of an engine to get an older machine on line again, a truck puller, or the dude who just 'has to have one' for his project toy.

On the road they're pretty much a useless boat anchor due to their insane weight, cost per mile (fuel economy, maintenance), and parts availability.

Best bet would be to do some checking around as a 'customer in need of one' to see what the going rates are, then advertise it for sale in the ballpark.

Just a thought,

Dan-

The K-series was almost built before it's time for on highway use. The transmission manufacturers couldn't scramble fast enough to build one rated for it. If I am not mistaken, Freightliner and IHC were the only truck makers to factory install one and usually it was the derated model 450-525 hp. The 600 was scarce, turned up by the customer mostly. I think if Paccar would have offered it (most independent operators of the era drove them) it might have become more popular.

opps!

Ok, I stand corrected. My old truck spec magazines don't show optional engines with extended hoods, just standard offerings.

Boy this is an old thread. The snow blower that KTA was in sold for a mere $5000. An oil field company snatched it up and took it to SW Wyoming. I sure miss that engine, it was a BEAST :D

Bob Wilson has been running this K in the Kenworth since the '70's as I recall. He was at the TFK's event this year and it still runs fine, it only has 1,000 HP his wife said he doesn't like to get passed :-laf

It's neat to think that 1000hp out of a 1150cid engine is a cakewalk... :)

I found a V12 Cummins (model/rating unknown) in the local craigslist recently - waiting to hear back from the seller.

Did you sell your KTA-1150? I'm looking for a used engine to power our 1980 Norland snowblower. If not any other leads would be helpful. Call Craig @ 760 934-0661
