2010 diesel jetta - need chip ?

powertown

Can someone tell me how much a Cummins KTA-1150-c engine with 1020 original hours on the clock is worth? I'm just looking for a ball park figure.

The airport that I work for has a 1979 SnowBlast snow blower that it has been trying to sell with one of these engines in it.

We haven’t had any luck trying sell the machine and may consider parting it out. I hate to put the engine on e-bay without knowing what it’s worth.

I have operated and maintained the machine and do know that the KTA-1150 is a real fire breathing beast of an engine.

I've considered swapping it into my truck but it would only fit in the bed and judging by the size of the beast, the weight alone it probably ruin the Dodge rear axle;)

Seriously though, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Get ahold of some truckers journals. Some shops are advertising for 6 clyinder K series to purchase. These came rated at 450hp, 525hp and 600hp. Easy to uprate to 800hp I understand. Good Luck.

The big cheese (Bruce M. I think) from Diesel Injection of Pittsburg might be interested. I probably have the company name incorrect but someone here can fix that. His articles come up for discussion once and awhile and are quite informative. He is a big fan of the KTA.

Hope this gets you in the right direction.

On edit, I see the post above references Bruces shop. Any links Mr. Mack?

Well, let's see, you take your extended cab, cut a big hole out of the bed and back of the cab, stuff that baby in there kind of midship and you got yourself a rather unigue ride eh?

If you cant get any bites on e-bay, it should be worth at minumum of $3500 as a core. Contact your local Cummins distributor for more info. If they don't want it contact Cummins Northwest ( 1-800-283-0336) and ask for Industrial sales, they may be interested if no one will give you more $. They have a K rebuild program, and I'm pretty sure the older blocks can be upfitted. If you do call Cummins have youre engine serial number handy, its either on the data tag or stamped in the oil pump boss below the water pump.

I realize it only has 1000 plus hours, but if it is a "thin flange" block, they are prone to coolant leaks at the heads, oil leaks at the front cover and the oil cooler housing, and a few other issues that end up costing big bucks to fix. I don't remember when Cummins went to the thick flanger linners, I think it was after '79.

If it has Jake Brakes on it they may be worth more than the engine, if you find the right person.

The "K" series is probably one of Cummins best creations but there is a saying among the truckers around here that goes... ..... "If you own a K your gonna pay" !:)

I've only seen one...

... up close. And you're right, they do cost a pretty penny to repair. The one we had in the shop had two bad holes and it was like $3500-4000 for just two kits :--) . We ended up doing a repower with an 855 Big-Cam. Those K pistons were HUGE though... Doug

Can't be much more expensive than owning an ISX or it's more powerful cousin - the Signature 600... .

Lots of folks have been complaining of up to two weeks of downtime per year. The heads have to come off, etc..... they didn't say exactly what had to be done, but it sounded like a pain.

The K's that have come into the Cummins shop that my son works at, have had valves problems. In the one that I saw the valve had separated from the stem and had banged around the cylinder. Quite impressive I might add, the valve head looks like a flying saucer embedded in the piston crown! Apparently this is not uncommon to be seen at around 20,000 hours of operation.

The owner operator wanted the truck back together and he knew what it would cost, but had it repaired anyway. The cost was around $35,000 for the rebuild. When they fired it up he was all smiles and said now that's the way it should sound:) Like I said if you own a K your gonna pay :D

I ya ever see one of those engines in a truck at a tractor pull. Lets just say they need more the 300 feet to stop one. There are about 5 guys that alway shows up with those big 1150's . They are competetive as hell. Doesn't even pay for the Cat or detroit powered trucks to even show up.

Jeff: The modified Detroits do okay for themselves..... but, I agree... there ain't nothin' like a K-series.

Cat powered stuff - no thanks.

I'm not totally anti-Cat.....

I'm just too much of a Cummins fan... .

Heck, anything that runs on #2 is cool in my book.

Perkins, Hercules, JD, IHC, Audi/VW, GM/Detroit/Isuzu, F*rd, Volvo... . they all have their places.

Yeah buddy, The K series Cummins is THE LARGEST ENGINE EVER MADE FOR ROADGOING USE ( Says Bruce ). It's also built like a bank vault! I've only seen one when I was kid. It was runnin' a generator unit at the county fair. Well worth the price of admission... ... ;). The K38 is flamin' V-12 man!
