2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Kumho vs Bridgstone

Im in the need for more tires for my 98. 5/stock rims. Im teetering between Kumho Venture AT 825 $92 ea. & Bridgstone Dueler AT$127 ea. (285/75/16) plus $58. ship. Anybody here have any expereince or recomindations? Thanks, Bill.

I'd think twice about the Bridgestone based on the latest recall.



I see lots of Kumho & Hankook tires hitting the market around here due to appealing price. I'm leary of Chinese made tires.

According to the FAQ off that link you posted John, it is not in fact a 'recall' but a "Voluntary Safety Campaign. "



From their FAQ:

6. Is this a recall?



No. When we identify an issue with one of our tires, we’ll be the first to step up and take action. We have early warning systems to identify potential issues with our tires -- quickly so we can act swiftly…so issues don’t become problems in the future. This is our voluntary safety campaign. We are not conducting a recall.







7. Are these tires defective?



No. We have data that suggests that to avoid any potential for future problems, the appropriate action is to replace the tires now. Although there have been some claims related to these tires, we aren’t aware of a specific problem with them. It appears that a small percentage of the tires may experience belt detachment, especially if they have been operated below recommended inflation pressures for the load carried by the tire or above recommended loads. We believe that if the tires are properly inflated and maintained and if the tires are not overloaded, they will perform well in the field.

So they've identified a potential problem and now they're dealing with it - what you would reasonably expect from any of the major tire manufacturers.



The Dueler REVO ATs are an entirely different tire than the regular Dueler ATs. I have been very pleased with the wet and dry performance of the Dueler REVO ATs for the price. Just a thought...

Mmmmmmmm - that recall is interesting - I just replaced my Dueler AT REVOs 285/75R16s with Toyo M55s. When the tech pulled my AT REVO Duelers off I noticed one had a split down the middle of the tread about 6 inches long like it had some sort of belt separation. They were just about worn out and I did not even think about the possibility of a defect.



I'm not sure what width your 98. 5 rims are but I quit running the 285/75R16s on my stock 16x6. 5 inch rims because that wide tire is not recomended for such a narrow rim. Look at any of the tire manufactures specs and most show a miminum of either 7. 5 or 8. 0 inch wide rim for the 285s.



I know a lot of guys running the 285/75s the 305/75s and even the 315s on that 6. 5 inch rim with no problems. In my case I contribute that incorrect combination of a wide tire and narrow rim to premature wear. Wanted to stick with my stock rims so I went with a 255/85R16 I'll see how they hold up.

I have purchased 6 Kumho tires for my truck. All seemed to wear out rather quickly, but I didn't mind because of the price. 2 weeks ago I was parked in a lot with a square concrete "stop" approximatly 4 inches tall in front of me. I found it easier to slowly drive over the stop because of the layout of the lot. When I got home I found that I now had a rather large buldge in the front right tire. I was rather gentle when I went accross. Made me really wonder how good these tires are. I bought two Michelin's

I thought about running some bridgstone dualers then i found out about the Revo,s they looked like a good tire . I called around and found the Revo to be more expensive than BFG AT,s I have been running BFG AT,s on my 94 Bronco for over 5 years and i love them so i could,nt help from going with the BFG/ATs 285s there is alot of poeple that run them here.

He asked about Dueller AT and Bridgestone is doing a voluntary recall on the very model.

I like the look of Revo, but don't need that much tire and decided it wasn't worth the price. I went with another Bridgestone brand, Dayton. I got a generic labeled Timberline LT for under $100



fishjack1 brought up an important detail on tire versus rim width. I went with a 235/85-16 to match the rim width but give a height similar to 265/75-16

I learned my lesson long ago about matching tire & rims.

The point I was trying to make is that there is absolutely no substitute for high-quality, high-end tires from a major player in the field (Goodyear, Bridgestone/Firestone, Michelin, etc. ). You get what you pay for, and the majors lead the way in R&D 'cause they have the resources. ALL manufacturers have their problems, and the major tire manufacturers are no exception.



I grow up as 3rd generation in the tire bidness (Goodyear since '32) and from that I learned you get the best that is available 'cause that's where you're going to find the most dependable high performance tires. I'm pretty demanding so I expect alot from the tires I buy. I have never been impressed by what the 'also rans' had to offer. They just don't have the resources to take it to the level the majors can. I have always been a Goodyear man, but at the moment I'm runnin' Bridgestone because I believe in their (high-end) tires. Price is only one consideration, and to me it is a minor one. In fact, the Dueler REVO ATs on the '94 will probably only make ~23k miles before replacement, but that's okay - they have a 50k mile warranty and I will simply pay the prorated price for a new set. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.
