Gee, I sure could use an Espar up here.....



Anyone with 14 lines (depending on how big your monitor is, or your video settings... ) worth of BOMBs need not disclose why they have any one particular BOMB..... it was probably on the "Just gotta' have it!" list..... which is in no way similar to the "Honey Do" list.



HIDs, LEDs..... someday, I too will no longer have any tungsten filaments on my truck.

Anybody that is going to run full LED's should be aware that the turn signals will flash at double the normal rate. Not enough current draw with the LED's, so a bulb out condition is sensed and the rapid flash mode is activated.



I am speaking of the 2000 and up trucks, not sure about the older ones. The new trucks take a 5 terminal flasher, OEM only item in my search. Actually Tridon EP27 is a replacment, but no dice on obtaining one at the places I have searched in Oregon. Schuck's is a dealer for Tridon, but they are not able to get that flasher.



I want to find one and try bombing the current sensing circuit. The OEM flasher is around $50 from mother DC, too much $ for destroying a perfectly good flasher.



I have been fighting this demon for a year now, eventually I will get this solved.

First... I found a device that will solve the low amp draw/rapid flash problem... .

It's basically a wire-wound resistor..... simple enough... . scroll down a bit to get a look... .

You could buy a resistor like this cheaper, but they did the homework and know what resistance value to use... . plus you'd be supporting what looks like a good company.



Second of all, I also found an 'LED step light' that I plan on using for a license plate light..... I ordered the chrome/white LED model... should be getting it in very soon.

I have built a homemade dummy load that plugs into the trailer plug. Works, but I am looking for a more elegant way to solve the problem. It is all in the flasher unit, just need to figure out a way to disable the current sensing circuitry. The dummy I hooked up, got real hot with prolonged use, maybe I had it sized wrong? Anyway, using a dummy load defeats one of the purposes of the LED (low current draw).



Thanks for you input, I may buy a set of these dummy loads just to see how they work.

Here's how I overcame the flasher problem. I tried to modify the oem flasher unit, and promptly smoked it. This forced me to find another answer to my problem. After looking at the schematics for the truck I conluded that a regular flasher could be made to work.

So, I bought an electronically controlled, two pin, HD flasher from NAPA. They have the same ones at Autozone for less. Anyway, I installed the flasher in place of the oem flasher, using the top connector and the far left connector. It just plugs right in. Blinkers worked great. Downside is that the turn signal can always be turned on. Key on or not.

To overcome the hazard issue with the flasher, because as of this point it still didn't work. I custom fabricated a paper clip, and wedged it under the flasher so that it acted as a jumper between the top pin and the center pin. I then replaced the flasher just as I had it installed before. Voila! Full functionality. Ya, I know. I'll make a better jumper later on when it warms up.

I was into this fix for about $20. You can probably do it cheaper going to autozone for the same flasher for $10. I just didn't know that at the time. No cost estimate, though, for the paper clip. I don't know if there is a part number for those.

I've never dealt with either of these companies until yesterday when I bought my white LED step light with chrome case from www.signaldynamics.com I'll let you know how I like it when it comes in.



I even saw '194' style LED replacement lamps... . they come in all sorts of colors... . could be worth looking into. (they were on one of the sites I visited yesterday... . )



I didn't notice the '1157' replacements being labeled as: 'white, blue, red, amber, green, etc'..... so it might be a good idea to ask.....

More lights will add up the resistance, but one of the benefits of the LED's won't be realized..... less amperage!



We'll figure it out... . withOUT using a dummy load.

I tried LEDs in the rear lenses and they were not nearly as bright as stock. They give you a spot that is bright and focused for a very small beam through the lense. I think that LEDs that are built into lense assemblies have a much better optical design (they are clearly brighter than conventional lights). My exerience anyway.

A place in Florida i stopped at called the 75 Chrome Shop had every possible LED light you could imagine. I bought small round ones for my tailgate. They are bright as hell, only $14. 00 each for red. www.75chromeshop.com He said to call if you dont see what you want.

I got my LED step light from www.SignalDynamics.com the other day... . it's really bright... I'm very happy with it so far.



I'll keep you posted as to how it works out on my new rear bumper, etc.....
