#@$%!On the to Missouri a month ago I heard a rock hit the passenger front side glass on my 06 Mega. Well last weekend we were coming out of a motel and noticed that the passenger front side glass was cracked just back from the mirror. Within a few miles the crack had grown cati cornered all the way across the window. I am guessing that I had a rock bounce off the mirror and hit the glass and chipped it this finally grew into what it is today. Why on earth would Chrysler use laminated glass on the sides of a vehicle. If this were tempered I wouldn't be looking for a new side glass. Is there a tempered unit available for my truck? We have two new trucks at work one chevy 3500 and a frod 550 and boath still use tempered glass.

What do I do just take it to the dealer and complain? that would be cool but I called the service amnager here at Colorado Springs Dodge and he acted as if he new nothing about th laminated glass. I'll find out when I call tomarrow.

With any glass breakage/cracking it has to be inspected to check for any impact damage. If the svc manager rules against you,ask that the chrysler district manager look at it to make the final decision.

With glass it's really tough to know whether a tempered window would have survived undamaged, or whether it would have shatterred on the spot.

Tempered would have deffinatly not have broken from this. I worked in a glass shop while in college and had a lot of fun breaking tempered window units. The side laminated units on these trucks, dodge is the only one of the big three that use them are even thinner than the windsheilds. The rock that chipped it a month ago came off my own tire.

I never thought about this feature until now. Google "laminated side glass" and you will learn all you need to know.

Theoretical benefits of laminated glass:

a. Security. Smash and grab is virtually impossible.

b. Safety. Does not shatter so occupants are more likely to stay in vehicle.

c. U/V protection is better than plain glass.

d. Sound absorption is better than plain glass. Quieter cabin.

e. Weight. Laminated glass is thinner and lighter.

Down side:

See "a" and "b", if you roll your vehicle over in the water, smashing the side window will be impossible. No need to carry around that little hammer (unless the back window is tempered, I'm going to check. )

This feature appears to have started in Europe, so the change to Dodge trucks had to be brought in by DC. One of the articles I scanned through noted that laminated glass is usually an option over there.
