Hello everyone,

I just recently received a new laptop computer from work, and was wondering what would be the best GPS unit to use with it for finding my way around. I don't need this capability for work per say but I figure if I have the laptop I may as well use it for more than just filling out forms and e-mail. My questions are. What is a good GPS unit, and software? And is there a way of mounting some sort of stand in my truck that won't get in the way of my wife in the passenger seat?Oh yeah my truck is a 92 Club cab with the captains seats.

Delorme

Street ATlas 2004 Deluxe with an USB Earthmate GPS. Have been using Delorme products for @3 years now, and is best I have seen... ...

Have mine mounted in my Ford, made a 1" square tubing frame with a 3/4" solid rod riser that my pedestal slide onto, allows it to swivel and/or be removed if needed. Wouldn't work with a stick, though. Will try to snap a few pics tomorrow.

I'll second the thoughts on Delorme's Street Atlas. They also have great book atlas' too. I've never owned a GPS, but when I took my landing craft on deployment in 1992, the Navy had just purchased Magellan 1000's for us and the Marines. They worked great, were easy to use and didn't cost much..... how the H*#@! did that ever get into the procurement system???

Anyway, it was a very handy tool and got me out of some nasty situations in extremely thick fog.

As to mounting; I work on the road a lot and needed a "desk". My wife got me a small wooden console from either the Ben Meadows or Forestry Supply catalog. It fit right on top of the factory console. I removed the armrests, since it is the perfect arm height for me. Used the heavy plastic velcro to attach the desk to the console. I have my cell phone mount screwed into the front. I'd imagine that something similar could be done with a GPS mount.

Good luck!
