Greeting again, I know my stock injectors are getting tired as I have already had to replace one. My pump settings are stock as far as I can tell and I would prefer to leave it there for longevity.

From reading the majority of post, my understanding is the larger injectors will give me a increase in power with out necessarily increasing the load on the stock pump or having to change the settings.

The Truck has reasonable power. A marginal increase in power would be nice and since I plan on replacing the injectors anyway...

Incidentally I plan on checking pump timing in the near future.

My concern though is since I live in environmentally friendly area (Denver) and reading issues of increased amounts of smoke and washer thickness, etc. What are my options and what would be the injector of choice, (I have seen quite a few post on the Lucas) Ultimately I don't want to deal with big brother and his emission circus.

thanks

Steve

Can't speak for the Lucas P. O. D. injectors but the Powerwagons(180HP Bosch injectors) don't make a lot more smoke but they do make a huge power improvement.

I would highly recommend the power wagon injectors. They have 5 holes per tip vs. the 4 holes per tip the both stock and PODs have. They flow more fuel but don't smoke at all like the PODs do.

For real smoke reduction you should definitely replace the stock muffler with something that has a straight-through design, vs. the offset design of the stock muffler. When I had a shop replace mine, they installed a 3" dia. glasspack. It was the first thing I'd done to my truck, and it killed probably 80% of the smoke that my stock injectors made at full throttle. You could also go with a larger exhaust system (3. 5" or 4"), but you're looking at a couple hundred dollars more there. Removing the airbox would also help.

Thanks for the update, sounds like what I'm looking for, any recomendations on who has the best price on the bosch?

As for the exhaust, I have been running a 4 inch strait off my stock down pipe for some time (real clean set up). No smoke other then a puff at startup.

PW injectors do cause a lot of black smoke, at least in mine they did. I just recently put my stock ones back in, to see if I could solve another problem I have, boy what a difference, like getting out of a corvette into a VW bug. I will be either putting them back in or something in between stock and the PW's

My pump is in the stock settings, with the timing advanced.

My 180's were an excellent upgrade. I had noticably more power and only a slight bit of smoke increase which was fully tunable with pump adjustments. Even after adjusting the pump I still had more useable power than stock and it was much easier on the pump in my opinion.

Now, the POD's are another story. You can really back off the pump tweaks and still have great power/response. BUT... they do leave you with some haze even at idle. One thing to note here...

the haze is much more noticable with my auto in "D" than in "N".

The slight increase in RPM's (125 RPM) from "D" to "N" is all it takes to reduce the haze a fair bit. If I ease up on the full fuel screw a bit more it reduces even further.

FWIW, you can make 180's smoke way more than POD's if you use the pump settings liberally believe it or not. (tried it) but its harder on the pump of course.

JMO,

bob.

Steve,

First of all, I do want to warn you that any bigger type injector can jeopardize emissions in Colorado. I passed my test with DD2 injectors, but only due to having a cool little device that cuts back my fueling levels. If it wasn't for this neat little device, I would have flunked my test.

Before you purchase anything, I highly suggest that you call Colorado diesel (303-660-9986) and talk to Tyler about emission testing. Then if you are still in the process of looking for Bosch injectors, call Central Motive Power (303 428-3611). Not only will both places help you out, but they are really great to work with.

Don't hestitate to ask for help if you need anything. We have several local guys here in Colorado that really know their stuff.

Kev, thanks, I will give them a call when I get back from my road trip. Personally several years and trucks ago, I had dealt with several dealers and performance shops claiming to perform power tunes on the cummins, needless to say, several hundred dollars later with neglible results with diminished fuel economy and some reliabilty issues, I decided that I will be the only one that works on my truck.

Steve,

I have the PW's in my truck and just recently went through the emissions testing without any problem.

I have a 12CM Wastegated housing, timing advanced, K&N, 3 inch straight pipe. With PW injectors, and with no fuel changes, my truck made absolutely NO visible smoke, no matter what, and not even at 4000 feet elevation.

With the fuel screw cranked a ways, I can now get a short, light burst of about 1-2 seconds if you suddenly mash it from cruising at 40 to 70. I also have 217 HP at the rear wheels.

The rest of the time, the truck produces no visible smoke, unless you get REAL harsh on the pedal... enough to spin the tires with the truck empty.

If you get a lot of black smoke with the PW injectors, and you have the fuel at stock settings, you have a serious airflow deficiency. I would not know just where to suggest you look, but going over the whole system from air intake behind the grille to tailpipe over the axle... WILL locate the reason for your smoke. Also, a 21CM hotside turbo housing may do it. It just won't make boost until you've got the engine near governor cutoff.

My truck WILL smoke at 4000 + feet now... not heavy, but leaving a solid "POOF" behind if you nail it, and a light trail behind you that you can see.

In the headlights of a following vehicle at night, you can see some haze if you got it WOT... But not during the day, and I have the fuel cranked pretty good.
