Big Single or Twins?

J&H in Redding is the best!

My setup has been fine with the SPS62 and the K31. But I am not sure if the primary is putting out enough air. I am not having any major egt issues, but I do have alot of smoke at full throttle. I have been thinking about going to the larger version S400 as it is not a difficult swap. I hit about 32psi off the bottom turbo and about 62-65 total. The wastegate on the primary is set to start opening at 30psi. I wonder if an S400 might help clear things up a bit.

Sorta figured this would be a waste of typing, but it never hurts to ask before you start buying things.

I tried lowering the opening point on the secondary charger and raising the opening on the primary. It gets doggy if I go much below 30 on the SPS. Keep in mind that at 30psi of total boost the K31 is showing 12 to 15psi. My towing twins with a Dodgezilla/3b didn't show primary boost untill 18psi or so. By 30 overall the 3b might have been doing 7 or 8. K31 shows positive pressure at about 7psi overall.

I think I am going to take the SPS62 off and sell it or trade it. The lag is a bit more than I can compensate for.

You could always try a Garrett GT42-02 (the one with the 102mm exducer) with a 1. 01 A/R T4 exhaust housing as a primary.

Just make sure you wastgate it with a BIG gate!!!

Or just call Jose at Forced Inductions to see what they have available for their current crop of S400 hybrids.

To bad you couldnt use something bigger like a SPS 66! I would drive up the hill and swap you straight accross for the 62! Just put some fuel to that beast and we'll just upgrade both chargers!

Thanks Matty, but i don't think I could get that thing rotating. I thought the SPS 66 was THE turbo for the 3rd gens. Come up some time and give me a ride in your 3rd gen. I've never even sat in one. I've heard they are really nice. We can take a ride in mine afterward in case you forgot how awful they ride.

Ron

Dodgezilla is one of the best turbos I've tried. If it wasn't for the drive pressure on top I probably would still be running it.

With the modified wastegate, drive pressures aren't an issue yet. We'll see when the wick gets turned up.

I love my 66 but when I hook up the sled trailer (about 7-8k) and go to La Porte or in the hills it leaves a bit to be desired. But hot rodding through Yuba City is fun!!!

I would love to come and let you check out the plush leather in the 3rd gen!

As for the way the 1st gens ride, Ill never forget the way my first truck rode!(91 reg cab, 6in lift on 35's maxed out VE POD's HX40 straigt piped)

Now that was a TRUCK!

I'm going to get another Dodgezilla as soon as I can afford it. I'll keep the SPS so I will have a spare. The DZ is alot shorter on the exhaust side, so I can make an adapter to put in in and leave all my plumbing the same. The S300 turbos do not spool as well or pull as hard on the bottom . Top end is a bit better, but not nearly as important for normal use. If I was going up into the 70-80 psi range the SPS would probably be better.

My Dodgezilla over S400 has 20-21 psi in the primary at 40 lbs total.

Dave, thanks for the numbers! Now for some more info, my setup at 40 psi total, the primary (Big Brother) makes say 13-15 psi, shows you why a S400 is better for lower HP, low end and for towing.

On the S400, it can come in several versions and can grow allot from stock.

Jim, with a tighter wategate setting on top, I see about 15 psi on the bottom at 40 psi total. In fact, that's how I run it around town with a boost controller.

At 60 psi, I make around 30-31 psi on the S400. At 70 psi overall, I am making 34psi on bottom. These are my full fuel settings. I run with the box off with injectors and a Smarty in my "normal" day to day driving.
