Another Allison bites the dust

This is a 50 Litre engine V-16 and 2000 HP

They say that they make an 80 Ltr also and it is 3000 Hp I think.

Most common Ap. is generators and Very Big Mining Dumptrucks.

better yet

Ha ha ha, we were talking big engines at work, and it turns out that one of the power rent packages that we have sitting outside has a 60 liter 3000 hp engine that eats up 93 gallons of diesel an hour  The coolest fact is that we can't move it with fuel, 79,000# and change dry  That big stuff sure is cool, until you have to pay for it, or if you blow it up :D

I have 2 gensets at work that have 1710 Cummins V-12's in them. I also have an ALCO 536 V-16. The dry shipping weight on it is 104,000 It came in a 50 ft container and is hooked up to a 17,000 gallon fuel tank. We just had to derate it because of the EPA so now it is only 1. 75 mega watt genset.

Yesterday I saw a train leaving the BNSF yard in KC, It was going west through Newton KS. Just behind the engine, were two flat cars of mining equipment. One had the frame & chassis for a big CAT ore hauler truck, and on the other one was a tandem V-12! It was two CAT 3512's joined at the crankshaft, on one long skid, making a V-24?. On the east end of one of them was some HUGE hydraulic stuff, I guess for the big ore hauler they were going to put together someplace. I'm guessing a single 3512 would be about 1500HP, so maybe 3,000 total for the Siamese twin?

That must be the Ariel JGV/B series compressor? Nice looking package. Clean install. .

I was wondering what type of driver other than the CM series Cats could turn that frame.

We just installed a Onan generator with the V-16 Cummins. This one was rated at 2020 HP. :p Produced over 2500 amps and took 15 runs of 500 mcm copper to get it to the main bus. It is powering a 14 story high rise in downtown Seattle. Now if I could just figure out how to put that motor in my truck... ... :D :D :D

If it doesn't have to be Cummins and it doesn't have to be diesel, check out this site with pictures I took back in 1976 of very big compressor station engines in West Virginia. There were 5 compressor stations within about 30 miles of each other near Weston, WV - 3 steam with 1800 HP Nordberg Corliss compound engines with 30 ft flywheels, and 2 with 450 HP tandem double-acting National Transit gas engines with about 20 ft flywheels. The Nordbergs turn at 95 rpm and the National Transits probably about 200 rpm. They ran since for over 70 years non stop, but are all gone now.

There's still a few of these gas compressor stations around - at least one in Pennsylvania.

Don't blame the Engineers

Blame the eco freaks for the loss of all of that great old iron. We regularly replace old Clark TLAs and Cooper GMs. I would rather construct our building in parallel to the old stuff so it could still run. However, our customers are pressured by air quality standards, operating expenses and system integrity to shut-down and pull the old ones. :(
