2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Largest tire for 4x2 trucks?

Ok, I searched, but didn't find what I was looking for really (or I got lost/bored looking through all those posts).

I have a 2001 2500 4x2 that will need new tires soon, and I would like to put larger tires on (much cheaper then changing gears). But I don't know what the best route to go is.

I am not against getting different rims, but would rather not spend the extra cash.

Ok, so what are the biggest tires that I can run on my 4x2 truck?

I dunno ... I am interested to know also . . like you I did a search and found tons of info for 4x4 but diddly squat for 4x2. :{



I was told we should be able to run a 285/75 16 at standard height (don't know of any 2WD's with lift kits).



Will be watching this post with interest, I have 265/75 16 BFG Rugged Trail on now and hate them ... can't wait for them to wear out

Assuming you mean tallest tire, the 255/85's are the tallest that I've 'heard' will fit (no first hand knowledge). I looked into the same issue when I was getting tires for my 99 and a TDR member from Texas said he was running 255's with no problems. They are slightly taller then the 285/75's, and a bit narrower.

I have the 265/75 tires now, and I don't really want to give up much in the width portion of the tires.

Ok, so 285/75 is the widest/tallest that will fit, where as the 255/85 is the tallest?



Anyone else try something different?



And what about gear ratios? I can get a reflash for the ECM to make it all better. But can't you swap a different speedo gear in the tailhousing? Or are they all the same gears with different ratios programmed into the ECM?

Ok, I think I like the 285/75 size for my truck, but what ones are available with an E rating?

Seems like almost everything I am finding is still D rated.

I know the D rated tire in this size has a decent load rating, but I really don't want to take a step down, as I do tow relatively often.
