Laser Eye Surgery

You guys are good with trucks I thought I would get some advice on Laser eye surgery. Any one had it done? How did it go? Just looking for personal experiances with it. I am considering getting it done. TIA

I had lasik done three years ago and have no regrets! It is the best thing I have ever done. I was at the Eye Dr. about a week ago for a routine exam and my vision is 20/20 in each eye. I can read a serial number on a Cummins five miles away :-laf My wife also had it done and she loves it too!

I know three people who had it done, my aunt who needed reading glasses, it lasted about 4 months then she had to go back to glasses, a friend's wife who now has issues with not getting enough tears and has to use eye drops, the doctors said it was a result of the laser correction, and two weeks ago my brother in-law, they did the wrong amount of correction in one eye and have to wait for it to heal to do it again in the right amount. They actually told him they made a mistake in the amount of correction. Interestingly all three were done in top Boston practices with 1000's of positive referals. Scary stuff if something goes wrong.

I had it done a couple of years ago, and I think it was one of the smartest things I've done. No regrets at all. I still amaze myself (and others) at how I can read things so far away. My niece had hers done too, and she's very happy she had it done.

In regards to reading glasses, the doctor told me that I may need to wear them someday (I never had to wear them, I was nearsighted since high school). She said that when we get into our 40's, the muscles in the back of our eyes begin to deteriorate and we lose the ability to focus on things up close. It has nothing to do with the lens of the eye, and laser surgery cannot correct it.

But, so far I have had no problem with focusing on upclose things like reading fine print, etc.

BTW, I make my living as a truck driver on the swing-shift. No problems here with halos or a starburst pattern when looking at bright lights at night. Some people will tell you about those problems, but those side effects were from the early laser surgeries and the newer technology has all but eliminated them.

Lasik Eye Surgery

I had it done Dec 1999, they have come a long way with it since mine was done. I did have the halo effect an somewhat of starburst also. I can still see very good at long distance's. I have noticed in last couple of years I do need reading glasses though, this was explained to me by the doctor also that the surgery performed would not change the need for reading glasses with age around 40 up, I'm 44. At the time, I was told that a brown eyed person was a better canidate for the surgery than a blue eyed person. I have brown eyes an did'nt have any problems. I'm sure this may have changed with newer technology. All an all I would do it again I'm satisfied with my results an not having to keep up with the glasses. I do need to go get a exam soon, I have been lazy about scheduling a appointment. Good luck if you decide to go through with it.

I had mine done about 5 years ago, followed by my wife two years later. Probably one of the best things we've done. Based on our experience, several friends have had it done. The technology is far superior today to when I had mine. Make sure you research the different methods. Most importantly, find a good doctor. I'd steer clear of these places that offer lasik for $299. 00 eye. Don't forget, you're talking about you eyes here!

I plan on getting this done when I get to Florida. I've been wearing contacts or glasses for 13 yrs now and I don't like them anymore.

Thanks for all the replies. I know of no one directly that has problems but have heard some storys. Most all the people I have talked to loved it like most of you guys. I guess I just need to go do it, it is time for new glasses any way. Thanks again for all the insight.

Kevin, I'm sure you probaly already know this, but some health insurance policies do cover the procedure. At the time my work health insurance did an my out-of-pocket expense was $300. 00. Back then the procedure seemed pretty high on cost, I have no idea what it's costing these days.
