Well it finally happened! I have gone to the dark side of the dark side.

I had always wanted a 5th wheeler and travel trailer to tour the US. Went

"looking" with the wife and she fell in love with a class "c" 29 foot, it is

a Ford E450 and a V10 GAS engine! I did some checking, Ford dominates this segment, and while there Diesel is an option for some vehicles, because of

wieght restriction it is not a favorite/common engine.

So do I look for a Dodge Cummins "hybrid" or go with the industry standard?

Not to mention "my wife fell in love with it! It has been fun two diesels and

6 years with the best diesel pick ups on the planet, but now is the time to

say Good Bye!

goodluck! with your purchase, but i wouldnt call it the dark side. . ford makes some good equipment, some of the best gas and diesel trucks i have owned were blue oval built. ive owned 2 or more each of the big threes diesels, and worked the crap at of all of them, engine wise i was happy with all them in most respects, truck wise i would call it a draw between the ford and the gm, as the best ,so guess were that leaves the dodge. {pre 03} before anyone lights up a torch,my next purchase will probably be a 05 dodge. i spend a lot of time in rv parks, based on feed back, your purchase should serve you well, but that gas bill's gonna hurt... .

Find a fiver that your wife likes. Sure would be nice to drop the trailer and have your truck to run around in. With all the floor plans out there Im sure you could find something you both love.

Sorry, I could never bring myself to sell my Dodge and buy anything Ford. The bar has been set so high with the Dodge and I know I would never be as happy. (quit driving fords years ago because of problems and poor dealer service)

My Father in law has a 24 foot Ford with the v-10. They don't use it as often as they would like because they only get 7-8 mpg.

My 2 cents- Don't sell the Dodge

 I don't get it... ... . if my wife told me she had fallen in love with that I would ditch the wife. Sorry, but a gas engine. I've owned them as towers and my Cummins walks on every one.

Hey Ralphr-Just because you're not making soot doesn't mean you don't have friends over here :) . Besides, how will you not be able to keep away from a new ram in the campground? Thats just... last post for now, isnt it?

:D

While I intend on going with a 5er behind my Dodge when the time comes that I can get away more, motorhomes have some advantages. I think the E-450 based class C's are a good unit, and if I was to buy one, I would definitely get the gas motor. Take a look at the JD Powers' survey under General Diesel and you can see why.

You will hate that V10 gas pig in the west. Altitude kills the power (no turbo, remember). Back in 1994 Dodge wanted to do a commercial on V10 vs. Cummins to show that their gasser was a reasonable alternative. It was, on paper. It couldn't keep up with the Cummins in the mountains, and Dodge killed the ad program. Dodge used Cummins for 5 years before their V10 and now for 2 model years after the V10 truck engine is gone. They still have the Viper V10 engine, of course, but Dave Dunbar reported to us that it dyno'ed at 421 hp in the SRT-10. We have no trouble beating that with the Cummins, and at altitude, it is a cinch.

*******************

I know it's not a diesel (SRT-10) but I thought some of you may like to hear how it did. David Dunbar

SAE corrected:

421. 1 HP @ 5370

465. 5 TQ @ 3930

***********************

Look how you gotta scream that V10 to make power! Sure, I know you are talking about the smaller Ford V10; I expect the comparison will be even worse with it, in the real world.

We are looking forward to your return to our forum after trying the Ford.

Ralph,

You will be very happy with the triton V10. Ford has done a lot of good things to that motor. I have two in large Vans, they are abused, and mistreated and will not die. Considering your options in the new rig you made a good choice.

I agree. I drove an E-350 V-10 van for my previous employer. The other drivers there flogged that truck without mercy, but the V-10 had no problems, and it produced more than enough power. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay the fuel bill.

It's all good Ralph! You'll really enjoy your new toy and the travels in store for both of you. Every truck burns something, gas or diesel, and both need lots of it. Your travels will bring lots more enjoyment than saving a few bucks on diesel. No worries bud, enjoy!
