Among 10 other things I'm doing to the truck, I'll soon be mounting my stock lift pump back near the tank along the frame. I'll then push the fuel up to the filter through aeroquip socketless hoses and fittings... and onto the VP with the same. I'm going to make a fuel pressure sending unit tap in the line after the filter.

Question is, can I install and use the "top loading" filter cannister without much fuss... should bolt right up shouldn't it? I dislike having to drop the bowl on my 99. Top load installation of the filter seems like a more logical way. Plus I want one of those polished billet filter housing lids off ebay!

I would think you could get it to work. The issues will be the fuel heater and the water in fuel sensor. I would almost bet that they are the same but it would be worth investigating before making the swap.

If you are going to make the swap, why not go to a racor system or something that flow better than the stock system... it seems like a waste to replace one restrictive system with another restrictive system...

Didn't think of those things. I hadn't really looked at a newer filter housing... only in pictures.

Spin-On would seem like an even better idea. Maybe even mount it down a little lower somewhere where its easier than ever to get to. Now I'm really thinking :) Maybe mount it right where the hose makes its turn to go from the frame up to the engine. Hmmmm.
