My 04. 5 one ton quad cab dually, 6 speed manual, two wheel drive, 89K miles has a shutter when launching under load, combined weight 21K. The shutter occurs when launching from a dead stop on an up hill pull grade and or during a tight turn. The shutter does not appear at any other time. The clutch appears to be OK as I have experienced no slippage. It appears to more drive train related, but I am no mechanic.

Any ideas????

Quite probable it is axle wrap created by launching under a load. Pretty normal with the 3rd gen spring configuration.

I have a 06 3500 dually and I have the same problem. Several solutions that I have read are the pinion angle is shifting, if you have a 2 piece drive shaft Dodge has a shim package that is suppose to cure the problem, I have not tried this as of yet. The things that I have tried are putting on air bags seems to help some (I pull heavy 24,600) when the 5th wheel is hooked up I start off very slow and increase the speed gently this avoids the shudder for now.

Puller

Airbags don't do much if anything to help with axle wrap and shudder. At least they didn't help my truck

Traction bars are about the best to cure the problem

Air bags seem to help some but is not a certain fix.

The Road Master system does not work on 3500 trucks as they interfere with the overloads and mounting.

Traction bars are about the best solution to stop the shudder from axle wrap and help keep things in line.

I wasn't posting the link as a fix, but as an explanation as the original poster was wondering what Axle wrap was.

I should of stated that

Does it always do it? Or worse hot after pulling a ways. Mine did hot after towing heavy for a number of miles. Added some friction modifier to the differential and it was cured in 10 miles.

I really can't tell you if the only time it shutters is when it is hot. The only time it shutters is when I am stopped and have to start on a pretty steep grade. On a normal launch it is OK. I hope to get to a Dodge dealership today to see what they say. Will let you know.

Good luck with that, I hope your dealer is better then any around here.

It's pinion angle changing with the load. Don't worry about it if you use the truck mostly unloaded.

OK. The truck is supposed to be fixed. The "center shaft support bearing" was shot. All of the other "stuff" associated with drive line is OK. I haven't pulled with it yet so we will see tomorrow if the shutter is gone. I suspect it will be.

This was going to be my reply also... . cured my shutter problem. Worth a try!!

The saga continues, somewhat. Yes the majority of the shutter is gone with the replacement of the carrier bearing. But as I drive under load, there still appears to be some minor shutter on a hard launch. I also know from time to time the mind plays tricks on us. Now the real questions, and I full of prunes or is the truck.

Just had to do mine last week too. My brother has been through 4 in the last 2 years on his 06. Pulls heavy. Might consider seeing if your DS overall length offers changing to a 1-piece shaft.
