Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Leak From Lift Pump Area

If it's not a stream of fuel, it's ok to drive it. I've had my lift pump off when I had a problem like yours and I thought it was a bad lift pump. It wasn't bad afterall. It's not too bad a job to replace it. When you put the new one on make sure that the cam lobe is on a low spot so you don't have to compress the push rod spring too much. I have no idea what they cost because I have never had to buy one. Take the fuel filter, starter, and front drive shaft off to give yourself room to work.

What did your problem turn out to be. When I was in there this weekend it looked like two or three bolts and that was it. The fuel coming out is not a stream it is more of a bubbling and then starts dripping. I'm probably not going to drive this week except to haul some horse's about 10 minutes. I will call cummins about the pump. Thanks again for your help Joe G. I will let you know how things turn out.

I was convinced that it was the lift pump. But, as a final check, I assembled the whole thing, input steel line, fuel heater/pre-filter assembly, lift pump, and output steel line. I blocked off the output line. I used a piece of wire to restrain the push rod completly in the lift pump. It will come out from air pressure otherwise. I pressurized the input line with about 20 PSI and ducked the whole thing in a five gallon bucket of water. The bubbles came out of the fuel heater electrical connection. There are pictures in my Reader's Rigs gallary that show what was wrong with the fuel heater. All of that stuff, except the steel lines, has to come off in order to remove the lift pump. I suggest that you do the same to make sure that it is really the lift pump leaking. Another guy used that technique. His leak was the fitting for the input line.
