I installed a Transfer Flow tank and tool box combination in my new truck in December and shortly after noticed an odor of diesel fuel. I discovered a few drops of diesel coming from the bed drain in the front of the bed. Had to dissemble the tank from the box, unbolt the tank and discovered a bad weld along the top of the tank. It only leaked when full or when the fuel sloshed to come out the top weld bead. It has been a lot of mess and work and am still waiting for them to make a decision on what they are going to do. Their first response was to sell me another tank pending their inspection to determine if I could be given a credit for the defective on. Makes a mess of a new truck.

I've owned and used a TF 70 gallon UFS Express tank for about five years, 500k miles, in two trucks. I've exchanged e-mails with the TF engineer who designed my tank, don't know if he designed all of them on several occasions and as recently as this week.

In my experience and opinion TF is a very professional, honorable company that will do the right thing. I'm sure they value TDR member customers and wouldn't want you badmouthing them on the TDR if they mistreated you.

Although it would be a nuisance and there is admittedly some degree of risk, I would probably take a deep breath and buy another tank and return the faulty one. I think you can be confident that they will agree with you and do the right thing if you are absolutely certain that the weld is bad from the factory. If the tank has been dropped or otherwise damaged it could be a different story.

I think they are pretty picky and careful about warranty replacement items and I guess you can't blame them. They wouldn't want to send a replacement tank and then have the buyer "forget" to return the original or send back a tank that he had damaged and expected them to replace.

In summary, I trust Transfer Flow and think you can safely trust them also if you are sure of the problem and cause.

Transferflow has asked me to post a response to NStates.

Here is there rsponse:

Here is our response:

Transfer Flow is aware of the problem with Norm’s fuel tank, which somehow got past our stringent quality control measures. Transfer Flow’s policy for product warranty is to have the customer take photos of the tank showing the problem and send or email them to us. Based upon the photos, we can then determine if a new tank should be sent and if the old one should be sent back for review by our QC and Engineering staff to prevent any reoccurrence. Norm should be sending us photos of the tank, and when the photos are received, Transfer Flow will see to it that the tank in question is given the highest priority.

I hope this helps.

Photos did not make it to Transfer on my first attempt. I sent them Thursday afternoon and had a response back in about one hour. A new tank was shipped Friday. I will be looking forward to its arrival and installation. They responded promptly after checking the photo.

Norm,

I'm glad to hear that all was resolved to your satisfactorion. My confidence in Transfer Flow was preserved, as I expected. I believe they manufacture the best auxilary fuel tank system available and back up their product with excellent customer service. The TF engineer that I communicate with always promptly answers my e-mails and will provide any assistance needed.

Now there's a smart company. They obviously recognize that forums like this can, in some cases, make-or-break their business.

Glad to hear things worked out. Now if only TF would make a stainless steel or plastic replacement oversized midship tank for short-wheelbase trucks. ;)
