Hi all,

Driving around today, started to notice a smell from the front of the truck. Smells like diesel. Pulled in to the house, popped the hood, got the garage light out, and looked at the engine. Around the 3rd and 4th injector, there appeared to be a small amount of fuel leakage around where the common rail connects down to the injectors. Small around the 3rd, a larger amount around the 4th. Anyone advise the problem and possible fixes?

Thanks!

I can take some pictures later and post if neccesary.

Sound to me like the #4 injection line clamp. It's a known problem. As it comes loose it will vibrate aginst the number 4 injection tubing between the Common Rail and where it connects into the valve cover.

If thats what has happened it requires replacing it.

Thanks mac. Is it something i can do myself, or does it require specialized equipment to replace? Also, cost?

Thanks!

If it were me I would have it done, but thats me. I believe it might require removing the valve cover (but not sure). Im sure theres a primeing procedure as well for the effected injector.

If it is a hole in the injector lines they are easy to replace. But you might try fighting the fittings a little where there it fuel.

Got an IM from MQuirin, told me to check the #4 line to make sure it was tight. Check the bolt, sure enough, got about 1/8th of a turn on it to tighten it up. Hopefully that was the issue, just loose bolt.

Thanks everyone for your input!

It is possible that the injector line nuts are loose, but it is more likely that #4 line is cracked and leaking. Especially if the clamp bolt is loose, vibration or stress on the line can crack it. Lines #4 and 6 are most likely to crack. #4 is most likely from stress on the line when tightening it and its clamp. Originally #6 did not have a clamp to lessen vibrations, but one was added by Dodge/Cummins that bolts to the engine lift bracket holddown bolt (that bolt is replaced by an integral bolt/stud).

Thanks Joe. I was able to tighten the #4 line bolt up maybe an 1/8th of a turn. Hopefully that has it, but i'm keeping an eye on it. Over the weekend i'll take the Intake Elbow off and get to all of them as best I can and retighten them down. Need to clean the area out real well with a rag, and wait to see if i see anymore leakage.

Thanks!!

Sorry to hear that Andres. Guess i'd better buy some spares to keep in my truck. Been meaning to find a reason to keep a boonie box in my truck, guess i got it now!!

Getting ready to change the transmission fluid out now in my truck. It has 37,000 miles on it, and this is first time i've done it. Shame on me... This should be an adventure.
