Has anyone had a problem with a leaking A. R. E. cap? I recently purchased a new Z-series cap for my 2002 Dodge Ram, long-bed, quad-cab and it has chronically leaked. Recently A. R. E. remade the cap and I had the remake installed Saturday. The new cap leaks worse than the original. I don't know whether this is a cap problem or dealer installation issue. I'm sure that A. R. E. is about to blame my problems on my over-the-rail Rhino liner. By the way, the over-the-rail liner was not an issue when I paid the bend-over-the-counter price of $1500 for the cap.

Where is the leak coming from or can you tell?

I've got a MX series cap and an over the rail spray in liner with no problems. I've heard that occasionally there will be a bad window seal but I've never actually known anyone...

The interface between the bed and cap rail is the source of the leaks. The leaks appear to be worse in the front section behind the cab than anywhere else. It's really aggravating as I have spent about 25 hours back and forth to the dealer for service and the problem remains.

Try giving ARE a call directly and tell them of your experience with this installer. (if you haven't done it yet)

Go for an alternative seal. Something better than the foam tape a lot of places use. If your in the seattle area, I could try to help.

guava,

Thanks for your help. I have contacted A. R. E. and expect to hear from them tomorrow. I think this particular installer is simply incompetent.

mkennedy,

I have an MX series... . only leak I have is via the window in the top, which is an easy fix. Did your installer double up the foam tape across the front? Just wandering as every cap I've had is doubled up there.

Thanks guys. I talked to the A. R. E. factory rep today and we are trying to strike an agreement to have the cap reinstalled by a different dealer. The rep seems to not understand that although A. R. E. is not in the business of installing caps, it is their product and brand name at stake. Obviously no one wants to pay for the reinstall and I have little faith in the original dealer who has now had a cap on and off my truck about 6 times. It appears as if the tape in the front is double thickness.
