changed the clutch in my '97 the other day. Went for a complete job, but the guy behind the sales counter sold me the wrong rear main seal and the wrong pressure plate bolts. anyway, now I have a gear oil leak between the bell housing and the transmission case. ( there was none there before) Where could it be coming from? the front of the transmission case was dry when I pulled it out. And I replaced the oil with special Castrol stuff. I hate to pull this thing again.

Front seal of the transmission or the rear main seal of the engine. Is it trans oil or motor oil?

I suppose it is possible to damage the front transmission seal but it is pretty well protected. Any chance you somehow damaged or knocked loose the steel plug covering the lower shaft bearing? Either way I don't see how you could fix it with out removing the transmission again.

we filled the transmission while the truck was on the lift. I'm hoping that possibly the truck was at an angle and we over filled the transmission slightly. I have checked the level in the transmission with the truck on the ground and it's still at the correct level.

I am running an NV4500HD on my '93 and it is slightly overfull about half way up the check plug with no leakage. Unless you've got a quart too much that is probably not your problem.
