I go out of warranty soon and have what appears to be engine oil between the motor and the A/T. Does not appear to be the oil pan gasket and I retorqued when almost new(small oil spot) and again now (larger spot) pan bolts. Is the rear main seal leaking? Goes back to dealer soon and I need to protect my warranty. Any great ideas will be appreciated. Thanks

How many mile on the rig?? Does not the engine come with 100,000 warranty on it. If you got a leak then I would think that they need to fix it. :(

Had the same problem with the suspected rear main seal leak. I insisted that the dealer remove the transmission to inspect the seal and determine definitively the source of the leak as my warranty was also expiring. The seal was dry and the leak was really caused by the dreaded blow by bottle. The tech told me before removing the transmission that that is where most of these suspect leaks originate. Relocating the bottle should solve the problem. I removed the bottle completely and added 16 inches of 3/4 heater hose to the top fitting allowing it to attach to the front sway bar and almost drag on the ground. That way the oily goo hits the highway and not my undercarriage.

I have had my bottle removed for close to 12k miles now and i have oil in the same area, i am wondering myself if its the rear main seal. My oil level is fine though, i still have over 75k left on the warrnaty, ill wait till it gets worse.

Things to try...

Request that the dealer UV dye the engine

oil. Drive for a while: From a couple of

hours to a few days then have them use the

UV light to determine where the oil of

coming from.

I lost the rear main on my 12V at ~25K miles.

The input seal to the trans on my 24V went

at ~30K. Both times the dealer himed and

hawed about pulling the trans and finally

did (only after several trips and they could

not fix it using their other tricks).

They even tried to convince me that the

small leak that I had was OK. I am sorry

I don't buy that s###. There is just no

excuse in todays technology for a seal

to leak. When I get under it to change the

oil it should be bone dry. If it is not

it should be fixed and I expect them to

clean it when they are done fixing it.

That way I can tell if they did the job.

Which on several occasions they did NOT!

I think you can tell that I have not really

happy with my 5* service on either truck.

Sorry for the rant. I hope yours is something

simple like a valve cover gasket but make sure!

A rear main is a all day job (or so the 5* has

told me). So you could be looking at $500-$1000

depending on shop labor rates.

turbo terry- same problem on mine. i insisted that the main seal must be leaking, cummins stated that when rear main went you will know it. all my oil accumulated around the inspection plate and caused the illusion of seal leakage. reroute your blowby hose and clean up and under with a good degreaser, see where it reappears. the blowby hose causes alot of suspicion underneath but these engines for the most part run rather dry.
