leaking pumkin

I noticed oil seeping from the front of m rear pumkin. Not enough to drip, just a light film in a 2 inch band around the front. Just wondering if it's normal for 45K miles, or is it a problem in the making.

You didn't list which truck you have... . I own 3 3500 duallys, 04, 04. 5, and a 05,with a total mileage of over 350K or maybe 400K between the 3 trucks... . the 04 has 235K for sure.....

We've not had problems but I'd look to see if its over filled... . the plug is way below the bottom of the seal where the pinion goes in..... and has good protection I just can't believe you've got a bad seal... . my guess is its overfilled and the splash is getting to the seal... and I'd check the vent on the top to make sure its open... when the thing runs and heats up... the oil expands and if the vent is not working there would be pressure to blow the oil out..... pull the plug and blow into the vent to make sure its open...

Normal. Don't use engine degreaser near the seal. It actually keeps shaft lubricated around seal, and prevents rust, which would lead to a real leak.

There is a TSB for some older models that warns against cleaning the grease seeping around front wheel bearings. A little oil/grease around all seals is good.

I had to do both the rear and front diffs on mine. The back at around 120,000 kms and the front at about 160,000. I had good leaks on both of them.
