Took the truck out today and noticed transmission fluid leaking from what looked like a small black bottle on the right side of the motor near the back. It had a sticker on it that said, "BEHR BM20281 CUST# 3935812". What is this thing and can it be replaced ? I can't find anything about it online ???? Thanks for any suggestions you can offer....

That is a heat exchanger. It is replaceable, the idea is to heat or cool the trans fluid with the coolant in the engine. I thought mine was leaking anti freeze at one time until I realized my 53 block cracked. You might check it closely to see if it is the exchanger, fittings or lines.

Does anyone know where to purchase the heat exchanger ? I can't find it anywhere on the internet, and I know the Dealer will charge a ridiculous amount..

That is a Cummins Item. Please provide Engine or Truck Serial Number and I will look it up for you. Did you check for a loose line or fitting???

I'll go with a loose line or fitting. Never seen the cooler itself develop a leak except internally.

I did check the fittings on the bottom and they were tight. It looks like the entire thing is rusting out and I could probably push a screwdriver right through the wall of the thing..

Boy, these coolers have gone up A LOT!!! You are looking at approximately $750.00 for that from Cummins.

I would search the net using Part Number 3935812 (New Number) or 3943657 (Old Number).

Item # 11 below....

I just played around with the BEHR Number (they supply coolers, radiators and charge air coolers to Freightliner as well), but no result. Probably made for Cummins as a proprietary item.

I just changed out the Injection pump and was not looking for another high dollar item to fix/replace ! I have read some threads on bypassing this part, any ideas on doing that ?
Thanks for all the input !!!

I was wondering the same thing. Is it really needed or is there an alternative.
