Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Leaking transmission seal

I have noticed that the end of my transmission is leaking. It has an oily residue that was not there few months ago when I was under.

It is the seal right before the drive shaft attaching point, at the end of transmission.

I do not know what that seal is called and how hard it is to replace it with new.

Can anyone who has done this, please let me know what is all involved and where is that part available.

I am surprised nobody had to fix a leak like that.
Well, thanks anyway. I will have to bring it to a shop then.

I take it your speaking of the trans. output seal. There is probably a brass bushing just ahead of that seal which requires a special threaded puller to replace. The bushing usually wears which then leaves enough clearance for the yoke of the drive shaft to move around causing the leak. You would be on the safe side replacing both the output seal and the bushing at the same time. You can see a picture of the bushing here.

The tool they sell usually will have the extractor, bushing installer and the seal installer all in one.

Yes, I do not have this tool, so to be safe, I'll just have a local shop that works with diesels do this.

Any auto shop can do it if they have the tools. Had mine done at the dealer.

Got it done at a dealer. Cost- $ 165. 92. The part alone (the seal) is listed on the invoice at $ 74. 75.
I hope the leak will be gone.

I replaced my seal and still had a line of oil spray across the bottom of the cab. I have a transfer case, (which uses auto trans fluid) but the yoke & seal area is the same. I found the cap inside of the yoke is leaking - It looks like a freeze out plug so check that area. The dodge dealer said they replaced a few yokes because of leaks. I got my yoke TIG welded, but I also found the transfer case vent was cloged!. There is a vent/filter behind the valve cover. I bought a filter with a 1/8" barb at NAPA for $3.

Autos must also have a vent - so not to build pressure? Check that also.

SSolderitch, It was the output seal leaking, and truck is 2WD. So that I had replaced.
I hope no more leaks there. I'll check in a few days.
