If anyone might know, could a leaking WIF sensor (leaks from around stem, not from discharge port) cause a hard start/white smoke issue? Thanks for any input on this ... .

I would think that it could. I think it could cause you to lose your prime which would lead to hard start/white smoke issue. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I am not sure of where your leak is, my 98's fuel filter is a little different.
If it's anywhere that can introduce air into the system, it can cause prolong cranking, missing and rough running with white smoke until the system fills.

It will act as if the return line is leaking. Or the heater on the primary filter. IIRC.....

Definitely. The system will lose the prime and become hard to start. The WIF sensor was about 40 bucks from a dealer when I bought my last one, the wiring on mine broke. Quite possibly your gasket is pinched. Remember to lube the o-ring with oil before putting it on.

problem solved! ... I replaced : WIF sensor, fuel filter, small 90* hose from pre-filter to lift pump (i think old one was OK tho), & pre-filter screen kit. After reading the replies I got here I seem to think that the leaky WIF was the culprit but since my hands were already dirty I thought I would replace the other parts anyway. Couldn't hurt. Truck starts up fine now... . thanks for the input fellas!! The TDR always pulls through!:D

I have a fix if you want it for when the WIRES break on the WIF plug.

Mine broke, so I modified it so it doesn't do that any more. If you still have the old plug don't throw it away.

Do tell? I did through the last one away but my current one is showing bare wires, I tested it with an ohm meter so I know it still works but I am definitely interested in the fix.
