I have an '03 HO CTD. It's hard to start, but runs fine. It often will want to crank and crank, and my rail pressure gauge reads low rail pressure at startup. I went to a Cummins service center (we are lucky to have one here) and the manager let me work with the tech to figure out what the problem was. No codes on the Smarty.
I had replaced the lift pump, it's not the FCA, and probably not the CP3. To cut tothe chase, we disconnected and capped off injector #1 and it started right up (a dozen times in a row). Reconnected #1 and it wouldn't start.
So I think the injector is leaking and the rail won't pressurize. As mentioned, it runs fine on the freeway, plenty of power.
Should I buy Dynomite injector nozzles? The whole injector? Or is there a better brand and who to buy from? I don't tow, and run the Smarty on level 4, so for my application, the power level is generally fine. I am assuming that I ought to do all 6 and not just the known bad one?
I am open to suggestions.
There is a chance bad fuel caused this problem. It started happening a month after I got a bad tank of diesel. I emptied about 20 gallons out of the tank and went through 3 filters.
Thanks in advance.
