I noticed the pinion seal is leaking on my truck and just wondering how much I'll get soaked (no pun intended) :rolleyes: if I bring it in to get fixed.

Paul, I'm taken mine in Monday to have the pinion seal fix and the dealer told me it would be about $50 to $70 just depending on what type of seal it uses.

I had the same problem, and I had hoped it would just be the seal that needed to be replaced. So I took the driveline apart, and pulled the yoke, and found a slight rut worn in the shaft of the yoke. Some little piece of who knows what got in between the seal and the shaft, resulting in the small rut. It was leaking pretty good. New yoke was about $145, and the seal was $45.



If you do this yourself, you'll need some special equipment, including a large slide-hammer type yoke puller, a 3/4" drive impact gun, and a 3/4" drive torque wrench, not to mention a 1 7/8" socket.



If you take it to the dealer, count on paying for about an hour of labor, plus parts.

Just for your information , I have 98 that has a slight grinding sound. Took it to a dodge mech. I trust and was told the pinion bearing was shot. The seal was leaking and he thought to much for just a seal. We pulled the cover off the rear end and you could see the filings runnin down with the rear end lube from the bearing. Bottom line, new bearings and seal for the rear end, seals and bearing for the wheels. $1668. 00. Dana 80 ain't cheap.

Are you thinking Speedi-sleeve?

Eric, I think the name you are looking for is C/R Speedi-sleeves. Spelling may be incorrect, but I know that's what they are called. I have used them quite a bit and have had good luck with them. In fact, some manufacturers use them from the factory to provide a replaceable sealing surface. According to C/R(if I remember correctly), what causes grooves in seal-riding surfaces is the polishing effect of the seal which eventually creates a surface which is so smooth that it cannot hold any oil film. Then, there is seal to surface contact which wears out the surface and the seal. The speedi-sleeves are stainless steel rings that have the correct micro-finish to hold a oil film and provide a new seal riding surface.
