Looking for some help...

I have oil leaking out of the vacuum diaphrams or pumps on my early 91.

I have the dual pod system... . the 2 pods mounted at 90 degrees from each other.

I think maybe only on the early trucks???

Anyway, they always leaked a little, but now the leak is worth fixing... . in other words it's making a mess out of my driveway... . earning the name "Valdiz". :-laf I can remove and re-install, but is there something else I should be looking for?

I only have a Chilton manual and I didn't find anything that mentions these parts.

I need some wisdom here as I would like to gather everything I will need before I start surgery.

Thanks in advance.

Jay

Jay,

The vacuum pump in that post is not what you have. I had to replace the ones on my 90. It is indeed 2 seperate pumps. I tried to take them off seperately, but ended up taking it loose from the gear housing as a unit. I also had to take off the weather flap that closes off the wheel well, so I could see better. It was one of the most frustrating jobs I had ever done on a vehicle. No matter which direction you're looking at it, it seemed like you could see better from the other side.

On a side note, after a yard period, Exxon renamed her the Exxon Mediterranean. I was in San Diego when they were to take her out of drydock. A Greenpeacer had chained himself to the screw. It seemed to create a problem... . don't know why. Commence Flooding!!!

Tug,

Thanks. Yes I have the style that you described... not the modern ones Phillip is thinking of(but thanks anyway).

Are you saying that when they leak they need to be replaced? Or can they be rebuilt?

Jay,

Mine weren't bad because of a oil leak. The dust covers were missing and I guess that over time the diaphragms got torn from debris or something. I should have checked to see if there was such a kit.

Scott!! What the heck is going on down at the garage!?!?!

I let it be known yesterday in no small way that I drive a diesel smoker and am proud of it. Needless to say, it turned some heads yesterday afternoon here in the parking lot :-{}

:-laf

"And it was declaired good. "... ... ... ... ... "Let the coal roll!!"

J, accoording to my 89 FSM diesel supplement, well worth the $10, shows how to rebuild the vacuum pumps, so theres gotta be a rebuild kit. When I bought my 89, the PO bought a new vacuum pump, receipt from Dodge dealer was $350. I had it replaced at another dealer, no more leak. I still have the old leaky pump...

I just swapped my diaphragm pump for a vane type this weekend. If you can't find what you are looking for, let me know. I still have the pump and it was working fine and it didn't leak.

Tugboat, you wouldn't happen to know H. E. (Gene) Keith from Floyd would you?

Hey BJM, I got my grid heater wires to hookup in my 89 intercooler install. Just cut open the wiring harness and bundle and it reached. I just remember you saying you'd have to lengthen yours.....

Thanks. I'll look at that this weekend. It usually doesn't get very cold down here so I may never need it, but it would be nice to know it worked if I did need it.

How much stuff did you change on yours?

Barry

Well, no rebuild kits available that I can find.

Son ordered a new one from NAPA... . don't know if it's one or both... I'll find out later this afternoon.
