learned behavior of automatics

any body know if its true that if you buy a ram used that it has learned of the previous owners way of driving and adapted to it. Afriend of mine said that at his dealership(chevy) that they sometimes remove the battery cables for a short while and i t resets the computer that deals with shift patterns and your driving style?

is this a wives tale or what ?

There used to be a guy (first name Jeff can't recall last name) that did a syndicated radio call in/talk show on automotive repair that was based out of Florida somewhere. This guy was unbelievable with his knowledge and expertise on almost any year, make, model, and design of automobile or boat. If it had an internal combustion engine, he could tell you whatever you needed or wanted to know. I recall that one time I heard him mention the same thing about the onboard electronics having some sort of learning ability for the driving habits, and other variables of the vehicle.



BTW the name of the show was called "On the road with Jeff (whatever his last name was)!" Maybe someone else has a better memory than I! He was sponsored by Jacobs Automotive Electronics, and 303 Products cleaners and protectants if that helps jog a memory bank or two.

I heard that about some of the Ford computers. I think on the Explorer.

I think our rams do the same thing. But it does not take long to get it to change and adapt. -- Like have you ever towed your trailer for a few days, disconnected and them felt like the shift points were a little different than normal. Then by the next day you did not notice it any more and it all seemed normal again. -- I would not bother with the battery thing. It will learn your style with in a few days.

A lot of cars and trucks have adaptive strategy (learning)for the transmissions. Removing the battery cables will clear this memory,so the computer can relearn. You can also reset this with a good scan tool. The ECM must then be "taught" how to relearn,buy driving the vehicle. Most manufactures will have a certain drive cycle procedure to follow. The trannies will sometimes get screwed up and need to be reset.



I don't believe this applies very much to the our Rams.
