Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting leather sling care

Hey guys, this is pretty cool. I've been looking into Mauser rifles for awhile now and found a Swedish M38 6. 5x55 at the local shop. Well, some money exchanged hands and I am now the proud owner. The rifling is sharp and the action says Carl Gustaf Stads! I haven't shot it yet, but planning on it this week. My concern is that it has the original leather sling on it and I don't want it to rot/crack on me. Any suggestions for keeping the sling as sharp looking as it is now? I thought about the cream I use on my boots but thought I'd run it past you guys first.

I would use a synthetic boot paste. Regular oil and grease will mold or mildew and look bad and smell.
