I bought a little timer for mine. Usually 4 hrs is good enough. When it's really cold, maybe 6hrs. Sometimes when I get home I'll plug it in hot so it's really nice in the morning. I have plugged mine in all night many times with no ill effects.

It's been down in the single digits here for the last week and I haven't plugged mine in yet. Just changed oil from Amsoil 15w-40 to Amsoil 5w-40 and I want to see if there's a difference in cold start.

0*F is too cold for this time of year. Hasn't hardly been above 10* for almost a week.

Dang Cattle, not over 10* in the last week!? I'll take the Seattle rain any day over that kinda cold... . we can drive an hour into the Cascade Mtns for the cold and snow.

Leaving the 700W heater plugged in for 12 hours a day will cost you about $25/month at average elec rates.

If 4 hours works for Cattletrkr it should work fine for me.

On edit;

I am assuming there is no thermostat that shuts it off after getting the engine to a certain temp. I measured mine at 690 W both when it was cold (32F) and warmed up. Plugged in for 2 hours starting with a warm engine it used 1. 39 kWh, i. e. it was constant on, no thermal cycling.

im not paying for it... lol

Come home,, plug it in, don't forget to unplug before leaving in the morning. If it's cold and not running,, plugged in.

Haven't had to plug it in yet here in Eastern WA. Only when it is going to get down to sgl + digits do I worry about it.

On an additional note though,, I always allow for a long warmup time especially if it has not been plugged in.

I always have and always will plug my block heater in as soon as I get home and leave it on all night, never any problems. I don't think it as hard on your electric to maintain warmth as it is to create it from freezing. Cause I remember I used to plug it in in the A. M. a couple hours before work and it threw my breaker a couple times. I have an older friend who had a trucking company for years and he told me to leave it plugged in like that. Don't notice too much of a hit on the bill but it is a little more.

I used to plug mine in anytime it got chilly. I'm on a tighter budget now and have not plugged it in except on the coldest nights here.

If the math above is right, that is about a buck a day. No big deal, but it all adds up.

Dfrank has it right,, I don't plug in unless I know it's going to get cold enough. (I guess cold enough is an indivdual assessment). But when I think it's cold enough like lower than 20F plug in the night before and leave it all nite.

Looked at my last post I said sgl digits,, for some reason I equated that to teens. Brain check!!

I do the 4 hour thing when it is 40 or below. I figure it is less wear and tear, plus faster warmup=better mileage sooner=$$$ saved. I guess it all averages out with the (small) increase in the electric bill. I just high idle with the e-brake on while I disconnect the block heater cord (power off), have a smoke and coffee until the grids finish cycling, then away I go (with heat)! :)

Unless it is going to be very cold for my area, like below -15 I do not plug it in, last year I did not plug it in once, we had many days around 0 or a little below. The truck always started right up and runs fine, I give it about 3 or 4 minutes and then head out.

I never plug my truck in.It in the garage & no heat

The garage the truck sits in has no heat. I never have plug my truck in. Today is the first time I have had my truck out for 3 weeks. Took it down and filled it up with diesel. If it got down to 0 I would plug it in I guess.
